Only thing I've heard is that the engine has a real reluctance to lose revs when off the throttle.

Slow by todays standards. Nice to drive though, if you get a good one, bearing in mind the youngest will be over 10 years old.

If you're talking about Mk1/2 Mondeos then Look for head gasket failure-water pumps on these have problems and can fail leading to HGF

An MG ZT 190 is also worth looking at, depending on your budget. There is a fully specced up one on Autotrader for about £3k.

167bhp (170PS) isn't huge, but I'm seldom overtaken. wink

yes

And mokes noise but doesn't really get there if you know what I mean.. 3rd gear works but that is about it.. Rev's out in 2nd very quickly when pushed hard. I'm sure the gear ratios are up the swanny..

They're not a bad ole bus

I know people that would claim they're faster than just about anything on the road, but I've driven a few now and discovered the following:

They're not quick

They're quite pleasant

Make a reasonable noise

They can be ok on fuel if you're not driving in diving boots

They handle ok, but don't be expecting Lotus handling

They do seem to have a reluctancy to scrub off revs for some reason

That's about it really

I would certainly have one, but it would have to be prestine and not arsed about with

Thanks for the replies.

Some interesing opinions I see. Well the quickest things I have driven are a 1.8T Golf and a Saxo VTS so I'm guessing the ST24 is at least as quick as these so isn't too bad.

I'm not after a rocket ship here, just a bit of pace and easy overtaking.

Keep the info coming lads smile

Aye they're not bad for turning a bit of pace compared to a VTS, but it wont be long before you find it lacking in the overtaking midrange (then again, I find overtaking in anything with 4 wheels a chore hehe)

Fully agree, will get a car that shares a lot of BMW parts, lots of toys, great chassis for a lot less than elsewhere.

I had one and loved it.

When you come off the gas, the revs don't always die away immediately - the explanation I had is that it's an emissions thing. Perhaps someone could explain how suddenly closing the throttle can cause emissions issues - I'm not sure I understand that bit.

It's easy enough to drive around it (smooth, unhurried gearchanges in the lower gears), but I believe there is a DIY fix that involves disconnecting and blocking a small rubber hose - search for 'throttle hang'.

It bothered me when I first got one, but after thirteen and a half years of v6 ownership I don't notice it.

If the budget allows, go for the ST200.

Finding a decent one is next to impossible(or so i have found-been looking!). Either modded, moon mileage or silly prices for what is, afterall, a 10 year old Ford Mondeo.

Good mate has one, by no means a slouch! He's pinned me in the passenger seat a couple of times. Ahem...

saying that, just looked up the 0-60 - 8.5 secs. It certainly feels quicker off the lights up to 30!

As S.Gonzales said, it feels like when you come off the loud peddle that the flow of gases isn't quick enough to allow for the revs to come down in an expected fashion, always like it's quick revving up, but very slow revving down.

My volvo is the same

IME, they are juicy, because that is how you will drive it hehe

Anything over 26MPG in normal use is good. Nice to drive, handle well enough, quick enough but not quick.

Watch out for the water pump problem as mentioned - easy fix though. The revs do seem to hold for a while, but you get used to it.

Decent ones are getting rare though now, and are worth good money. An SiV6 may be worth thinking about - will be a LOT cheaper and no slower.
