Following on from the thread on here earlier about disused airfields, are there any roads in the UK which are now abandoned or disused? I'm thinking of roads that now lead to nowhere, or roads that are no longer in use due to new roads being built etc.

Isn't there a bit of the old A5 in Snowdonia that's now disused?

There are some UK roads in the Lounge thread - photos of abandonded stuff (or whatever it is called) IIRC.

ETA: A linky to the thread

Theres a couple up near Stokenchurch - roads which were cut in half to make way for the M40 - they're just overgrown tracks with grass in the middle now though

Got some like that round the corner from me, one bit even has a bridge, A329 cut it up.

Several exist around reservoirs. I'm thinking of Kielder in particularly where roads which used to lead to the now drowned villages just lead into the reservoir. I'm sure plenty exist around other reservoirs as well.

ETA:

This one for example, which I think used to lead to the village of Plashetts, now under Kielder Water:

Better make sure you have good brakes if you are hooning on one of those roads then!

Reminds me of this actually hehe

Another one not in this country, but found out about it from the website of a campsite I was looking at whilst looking at doing a trip around the Western US in a motorhome.
The bridge to nowhere, in the hills above LA

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bridge_to_Nowhere_%28...

In the same sort of area I also remember seeing an article on the Roadtrip America website (I think) where someone had followed the road of one of the original highways from the 1920s, I seem to remember there were abandoned buildings along the route.
Unfortunately I can't find the page now frown

And finally, there's the Nurburgring Sudshleife

The old manchester road - from Sheffield - at Flouch.

Its been replaced by the woodhead passs - and the old raod or at least the start of it is still there..... not sure what happens if you follow it?

Hmmm a quick google reveals that it just joins the new road.

Rather disapointing.

I seem to recall that the car park at the end of the northern leg of that road is a dogging venue... eek

Not in this country but back in January I was driving a Camaro SS through Lake County in Florida when we stumbled open a road network that was completely disused. It was quite apparent that they had created a network of roads for a housing estate but never built the houses.

So there was nobody around and I was in a big tail happy V8. Fun times! driving

As you go into Doncaster from Bawtry, there's a road off to your right that used to go to finningley before they built the new airport. It's got concrete bollards across it now.

Is that where two people stand at either end of the road and shoot at each other?

No, they dismount their carriages, get their manservants to furnish them with their finest rapier, and they fence until one either submits or dies.

This one isn't actually disused, but it does feel like it is.

It's the old A74 in Scotland, now replaced by a motorway but in places the dual carriageway has been left behind and is very, very empty.
