As per title, what is the going rate for the rental of a single garage?

No light or power, but next to mine in a block so easily sorted.

I'm thinking about an offer of £20 a month, but the guy is chancing his arm at £30 a month. The guy is the owner and my next door neighbour. No contract, no notice and no minimum term. Mine if I want it for however long I want it.

Also, while I am here, does anyone have a clue what a garage would be worth? Single marley garage, in good condition, in a block of 5, in a quiet residential area with secluded access. The appeal is that it is next to mine, so I would in effect have a double garage with private parking space in front of them both, and both would be privately (as well as publically) accessible via my property/boundary, whether I rented or bought it.

As it is adjacent to mine I am seriously thinking about making the guy an offer as I know he is far from flush, lives on disability benefits and would probably jump at a low 4 figure cash lump in exchange for what is basically changing the boundary on his deeds from his point of view. It also makes a better investment than paying £240 a year for the use of a garage I don't 'really' need....

But the fact that I don't really need it is irrelevant. It would be a good excuse to fill it with a weekend toy/project...

Haven't seen anything under £50/month in Bristol. If it was near me I'd snatch his arm off at £30.

Weekly charge for a garage in Reading, for non-council, non-disabled residents ranges from £13.89 to £8.93, depending on location. So £30 a month for next door to your house seems good value smile

Crikey. Having spoken to people at work they seem to think the rate is £20 a month so that's an eye opener!

Maybe a cheeky punt at £25 and I honestly reckon he would go for that. If I can't talk him into selling it to me for a smidge over £1000 plus me covering the paperwork fees that is...

Look on gumtree to see what garages are being offered for rent for locally.

Look on rightmove to see what they are being offered for sale for, but locally it's getting towards five figures.

Could you meet in the middle and agree on £25.00?

Council garages in Bristol are ca £11.50 per week. They go at auction for anything up to 30-40k, depending on area obviously.

Why be so mean to a neighbour though? I suppose some people see more value in money than me, but why not find a value you're both happy with?

If your neighbour's poor, and £30 pw wouldn't hurt you, why beat him down another miserable fiver?

If you're in the south which I think you are then 1K wont buy a garage, I'd offer at least 2K as the ones listed in estate agents for sale are usually 6K and up!

I've been looking for a while for one anywhere near Stirling and there is NOTHING!!! I'd do a couple of backflips to pay £30 a month.

I forgot that RM does garages and other stuff.

Anyway...eek.

The going rate is between 20-40k. For a freaking garage in a block!! It makes 120k for a 1 bedroom flat look reasonable!!

Anyway, I might have to turn up round his with a nice bottle of whisky and a few grand in used notes and gauge his reaction. It would have to be a bargain, and 20k plus for a 15 foot x 7 foot space with a door isn't a bargain in my eyes, but if there is a deal to be cut...

We could do with a section in the Classifieds for this sort of thing too? scratchchin Couldn't we?

I mean I rent through one of the big companies, but they don't want to rent out (or buy) a spare garage I have 50 miles away!

Where on RM? - I can't see it!

I bought an additional garage for about 2.5k, ten years back - I don't know where you are but that's a bit steep!

Good idea in theory. I'm sure there are plenty of people looking for a cheap safe place to store their Pride and Joys and or use as a workshop.

How on earth does one go about acquiring one of these "lock ups"? I've heard about it but haven't the first clue on how to approach the problem.

Because I am looking for a bargain and I am a self confessed tightwad. Business is business and i'm not a charity.
