My trusty BMW E28 had blown the exhaust manifold gasket, I could see that the 2 studs for the number 1 pot had gone west and it sounded like the BBMF Lanc.

It was evident that I wasnt going to sucessfully drill them out in situ, so I whipped the head off, needed a new cam belt now anyway and a new oil seal on the front of the cam.

I got it back together yesterday, all new studs and gaskets, took it for a drive today, quieter and smoother than it has been for years. A real pleasure to drive, had a great time pootling round town on some errands.

I've just been out to move it onto the drive for the night and it wont go. Grr.

Its dark and raining so it'll have to wait until tomorrow.

real bangernomics would have been clamping down the remaining manifold nuts a bit more and covering the manifold in exhaust paste. ;-)

Agree with the last;
If you're doing Bangernomics, then you need reliable, but only as good as the rest of the vehicle. If you can get the Bangernomics level right, then all the bits will fail at EXACTLY the same instant.
Time for a "New Banger"

Its been dead reliable for 3 years and 30k miles, not bad for £470 RWD and a 6 banger.

Gave the fuel pump relay a tap tap tap this morning and all is well. Reckon I might replace that just to be sure.

Bangermonics not going well...

After the new head gasket and fuel pump relay playing up I found I was losing a little water. I found a missing jubilee clip, only got my self to blame.

But I was still losing a little water, I found a tiny little cut in a hose after a bit of searching. eurocarparts ordered in the wrong part so I went to BMW, they ordered the wrong part too, some confusion, thankfully, the very helpful fella in Snows Portsmouth spotted the potential mix up and ordered in two hoses, one of which turned out to be right. I've been very pleased with the BMW bits I've bought and their service, given its a 25 year old car.

So back on the road, still loving the E28.

But I thought the brake pedal travel seemed a little longer, I wondered if it was getting longer, I planned to get my mate to jump in for a blast, see what he thought, I didnt get that far, master cylinder gone, nursed the car home, ordered a new one.

Fitted the new MC tonight, I've been very patient with that car.

Until one of the bleed nipples had rusted round....

Have ordered a pair of new brake cylinders from ebay.

So this weekend, Mrs H is going to her mum's in the Merc, the 911 is waiting for an engine and the BMW's got no brakes and the Jag is in a million bits.

Given I'm a fat bd cycling about not going to do me any harm this weekend.

I still don't think you've philosophically embraced this bangernomics thing. wink

Yeah but you've fixed things properly and made it better and now you love it and that's where it's all gone wrong bangernomics wise.

Car wise however it's an excellent thing to run.

This weekend I will be replacing discs, pads, inner CV joint, anti-roll bar bushes and rear trailing arms bushes. Hopefully I'll have a silent Puma after that!

Replaced the anti-roll bar link arms last weekend, what a difference, completely transformed the car!

Were doing bangeromics with the Volvo thing is nothing as yet has gone wrong.... Christ I don't change any filters or the oil or the coolant or the brake fluid just top it up - but it never needs that either.

Think one of the tyres is getting to the limit now so I have the choice of new tyre as only have 4 alloys and steel full size spare OR running the spare get the life out of that tyre... Will look odd but will save the coat of tyre replacement would only change a tyre then if another got down tp legal limit.

True bangeromics. Not washed once in two years not guy cursing the filthy body and gubbins.

no way real bangernomics would have been substituting one of the other relays in the car and sacrificing something less essential...;-)
