Do the DVLA muppets still have a habit of removing driving catagories from your license?

Your local main Post Office MAY be able to do it for you by then, worth checking.

Just renewed mine, and at the same time added Category A onto it, having passed my bike test end of last year.

Was very pleasantly surprised to recevie it bak all correct, even with all the inherited "grandad rights" still on it, so can still drive up to 7.5 ton...

I did, howvere, take copies of every single peice of paper I was sending off, and also took it to my local DVLA office to submit it.

Not long replaced mine, I got pulled for a spot check and produced an expired licence a month ago (3 months expired).

Eeek! Luckily he let me off and told me to renew it, which I did.

So, moral is..... don't forget to renew!

just enclose a cover note say along the lines of "please note the entitlements I wish to retain on my license a,c,b,x,y,z, etc......bla bla"

I do have them every now and then

also a good idea to photocopy or take a decent picture of both sides of both parts too before you send them off...I did just in case

As getting near to and OLD BOY staus I still heve the pre photo licence which is valid up and till I am 65.
Back in the old days you used to have to renew your old red licence every 3 years I believe.
They then brought in the lifetime licence where you had to pay a one off fee of £10 I think and it would last up and till you were £65.

So now if you have the newer photo licence you have to pay a tax/ fee every £10 years. £22 or near I believe . Goes up every year.

We motorists get screwed every which way.

I think I'll keep the non photo licence that I have, Apart from not needing a dodgy photo it's free

I've reciebved an "application to renew the photo on your driving licence" and nowhere on this form says that you have to do it!
The box you tick to send them, £20 and your new photo states "I WANT to renew the photo on my driving licence"
So my question is:

Is there actually a legal requirement to update the photo? I've asked the DVLA by phone and the 3 people I spoke to have said they are not sure

The Photo has to be an accurate depiction of your face, if it isn't it needs updating, this could be because you have grown/cut your hair, got old and wrinkly, had a nose job, dyed your hair etc.

There isn't a requirement to update it, just to ensure it is accurate, so either change your appearance to match the photo or update the photo!

AFAIK there is no legal requirement to have a photocard licence at all - you just can't get any other type any more.

(but if anyone can find the legislation, I'm more than happy to be corrected).

And for reference, the old paper licences were valid until the age of 70, not 65.

I forgot to renew mine, the post office with the scan thingy said they couldn't do it as it was past it's expiry date (date on the license) and suggested I wasn't eligible to drive anymore as my license had expired.

So what's the deal, am I able to drive, will I get fined for missing the deadline and do I have to pay the £20 renewal charge (sent it off anyway) ?

Any info on this appreciated.

Lucky - A guy I used to work with had 3 points due to expire last year, the month before they were off he was stopped doing 90+ on the M6, handed over his licence which had expired about 2 months previous. He was hit with 6pts and an LC10 for the licence and 3 points for the speeding offence. I don't know the exact ins and outs, but he was summonsed under totting up, but the previous 3 points had expired by the time the court case came around, and he is now driving like a nun due to 9pts on his shiny new licence...

I've also resisted changing over and still have a fragile old green license.

I think you'll find it expires on your 70th birthday and not 65th as you say.

Mine expires next year, must lose some weight and get a haircut before getting the photo. Don't want another decade of Fatso McLonghair staring at me every time I look at the damn card.

You've already committed the offence (driving or not). It's not that you don't have a licence, it's that you haven't surrendered it for a change of photo as required.

Thanks to this thread I've just checked and found that mine expired last October! The good bit is that it is painless to renew online and they just use your passport photo, but it shows how easy it is to "forget" it.

I just sent in my old paper license (address change). I thought they still issued the old paper ones, but no, I had to re-apply and get a photo type. (And of course you still have to carry a bloody sheet of paper around with you !). Surprise, surprise - all entitlements still present.

Only now I'm going to have to renew every fkin 10 years !
