Mercedes E Class Estate (W210): Are There Any With NO RUST??
Discussion
I'm in the market for a seven seater, and don't want to go down the MPV route. Got around £5 to spend wich tips me into around 10 year old territory on the E Class (always fancied one). Now I've looked at a few, ranging from rusty heap to slight bubbling on roof over tailgate hinges. If I had a pound for every time I've heard the line "well, it is a ten year old car..."
My question is, are there any clean ones and have I been unlucky so far, or, if it hasn't got rust, it will have soon?
Not fussed if it's petrol or Deisel. Just want good condition.
Thoughts and advices appreciated.
Mods, have tried the MB forum, but not much traffic. Ta.

W210's are known for the rust. MB changed their rust proofing back to decent in 2003 I think.
I guess it's just keep looking....
I was told by a guy from Dupont that it was the paint process that was changed, as the paint was lifting off the bodywork allowing moisture in?I guess it's just keep looking....
Either way they've sorted it.
Only looked at one in that price range, rusty rear door tops, under the rubbers, badly done wheel arch repairs (outside of the Merc warranty, despite full MB history), rusty at the front on top of the spring hangers and squeaky a/c...
You'll end up looking at several, but a proper MB warranty repaired one, which has full MB history would be the way to go... or just buy as non rusty a one as possible, and run it until it falls apart - the drive was superbly smooth and the rear load space was great.
That's my 2p's worth, and I ended up with a Saab 9-5 instead (and yes, the load space is somewhat smaller!).

Trouble is, MB may have fixed the rust they can see, but every W210 ever made will still be rusting somewhere. Front subframes are known to fail through rust as well but not all will have been caught by the MB goodwill program. One of the front spring pockets simply fell off the chassis on ours. Fortunately it happened at manoeuvering speed rather than on the motorway You'll end up looking at several, but a proper MB warranty repaired one, which has full MB history would be the way to go... or just buy as non rusty a one as possible, and run it until it falls apart - the drive was superbly smooth and the rear load space was great.

I wouldn't touch another one with a barge-pole unless it was a disposably cheap hack and I didn't mind driving a car with obvious rust. I wouldn't recommend that anybody pay more than a couple of £k for a W210.

Tell me more about the Mobilo warranty. Would paperwork have been given to support this?
It's not actually done under Merc's Mobilo warranty, it's considered a 'goodwill' repair. Car must be under 8 years old, original paint (they will test for this with a depth gauge), MB service history, owned for more than 6 months. My CLK was repaired at MB Leicester in '08, I didn't get any paperwork. 210s are also prone to the front spring cups corroding, and eventually coming adrift. You don't want this happening (!), so get any potential purchase inspected.

I'm guessing that getting enthusiatic with the waxoil on an inspected, decent (as decent as possible anyway) one could be an option, if you really must have a pointy star on the front. Or just buying something that doesn't rust away of course.

Subframe rust is easy to spot and easy to repair. The front suspension cups are also an easy repair, and failure doesn't result in a loss of steering or drive.

I'm sure the cars on that site are immaculately prepped, but they are very expensivePHer Garlick got a decent 1994 seven seater estate for £1800 recently, which seems like good value.
