what car for easiest big bhp gains?

I have been doing a bit of reading up on this on the net and even though my budget is only £5000 (pikey i know) what cars offer the easiest power gains for not too many mods. not chasing any particular power figure apart from having something unusual and fun like most folks on this site. apparently skylines and supra's offer big gains but in my price range they seem a little ropey.
I take it 5k is to buy and mod the car?
You could get something like a Fiat Coupe 20VT and have it remapped (could easily see 300bhp) and still have enough left for a holiday or keep the spare for when the torque steer gets you!
For the full money you could be looking at something like an Evo4 with a couple of tweaks, again 300bhp. 300bhp in one of those isnt the same as a BMW M3 Evo power, you get it all in one go whereas the BMW has to be revved.

R32 Skylines are good for this...
yip - Saab 9-5 2.0t, can go from 150 to 200/210bhp for the cost of a couple of tankfuls as a stage 1 upgrade (just a reprogram of the ECU) then on towards 300bhp for about a 2 or 3 grand. R32 Skylines are good for this...
pick one up for £1000-3000.

Most will say Jap turbo. However I don't fully agree, sure there are some quick gains to be had on many, but there is a limit. Most stock turbo's will only push so much air before you need a bigger one and a lot of them will need an engine rebuild before then. So while they look like cheap gains, they are more costly and and require more work than some will give credit for.Example, Subaru Impreza Turbo 2000. Up to 237hp in Pro Drive form, 280-300hp is possible, but anything more gets very expensive. Plus the stock brakes and gearbox aren't up to it.
So some oddball suggestions.
V12 Jaguar. These make 280-308hp in stock trim. Bolt on's will make more. But they'll take a 200 shot of nitrous no bother. So that's around 500hp.
Jaguar XJ8 or XJR8 - similar idea.
Along this same theme, Yank V8's are all good for HP. £5k might get you a LS1 or at least an LT1. Both easy over 300hp (Ls1 in stock trim). Loads and loads of mods.
Stock block/internals are good for 550hp. Add some better pistons and rods and the block will handle around 1200hp!!!!
There's no replacement for displacement!

I'd suggest any GT-R still with ceramic exhaust wheels is a non-starter on a budget because you'll have to swap them to go much over 1 bar.
Any of the pre GT-R skylines R32 R33 R34, even the lower spec ones that are still turbo charged can be tuned to massive amounts with varying degrees of turbo/ charge cooler and mapping mods, its not uncommon for tuned examples to be putting out 4-800 bhp depending on how much wonga you throw at them. I think quite respectable power hikes can be achieved with mapping alone.

The cars that were "limited" to 276hp, were very much over engineered...
For example, the R32 GTR "only" needed a power commander and a pair of mafs from the 300zx to bring the power up to aboud 400bhp iirc...
I very much doubt you could say the same for a singe turbo'd car... (unless it's been converted from a twin to single...)
