Hi,

I have the opportunity of getting a new Golf GTD as a company car and I'm after some opinions.

I currently have a Cooper S, and whilst I realise it won't be as much fun to drive, it should have similar if not better shove.

Thanks in advance.

Similar if not better shove? Is this some sort of a joke?

It's a 4 pot Golf diesel not an R32.

The most popular company car for those in my office who have an allowance.

Not the most exciting car you will ever drive, but plenty go and a dose of diesel economy.

0-60 8.2 secs , 137mph and 47.9 mpg combined. Better than a kick in the balls.

You came up with this bizarre comparison, not me.

And to me, torque is shove. The GTD has a healthy amount.

I have a Seat Leon FR so same engine. It's pretty good for a diesel.

I can't get over the crazy list price. Although I'm not paying, it will effect the tax I pay.

including the contribution towards this car, it'll cost me around 200 a month.

Currently I'm paying 150 for insurance alone.

I had the passat with that engine so slightly heavier but it never went above 40mpg averaged around 38mpg. You will feel very underwhelmed compared to the Mini.

True, I suspect it will be far more sedate than the MINI.

I'd like to test drive one, but the lease company will get one from christ knows where, and I don't want to waste a dealer's time on a car I'm not going to buy from them.

Ditto. SWMBO was unfortunate enough to have an Altea FR with that engine and it was just ste. Delivered mid 30's mpg on a sedate motorway run and whilst diesels aren't renowned for having a characterful engine note, this thing sounded like a 20 year old Transit. Maybe we just had a bad one confused as the car had other issues but trading it in was cause for celebration and I'll never buy a car from the VAG brands again.

It won't be anything like as entertaining to drive as your Cooper S (we've had one of those too)cloud9.

I had one for three weeks as a short-term hire car.

Found it very nippy and good on the road.

Good on fuel too.

It has three seats in the back as oppose to two in the Cooper S.

The S seems more like a Go-Kart but the GTD is also very sure footed.

Enjoy!

There's no doubt it'll feel dull after the Cooper S. I had a Jetta 1.9 so I can well relate to the noise. As for the mpg, my MINI doesn't drop below 31 and I never really drop below 85 mph when on the motorway.

Bit of a misfit

A Scirocco GT TDI 170 can be had for less, yet is better equipped and offers the same performance/ economy combination

A BMW 120d has it licked on performance, drive and economy yet costs no more

An A3 TDI 170 costs pretty much the same and again same sort of performance and economy as the Golf Just checked and it seems now the Golf GTD is here Audi have discontinued the A3 2.0 TDI 170 confusedscratchchin

Can't think why you would buy the GTD over the above. If they had kept the 2.0 TDI 170 as a 'GT' then it would have been OK as it would have undercut all the above, but calling it a GTD and making it a sort of diesel GTI (yet slower than the GT TSI 160) has left it rather expensive and pointless.

Yes but its a diesel, so the powerband ends at about 4000rpm therefore the actual torque through the wheels compared to, say, a GTI doesnt reflect the figure on paper, does it?

I've got the 140 in GT spec and that's got a goodly amount of shove and go (economy's not bad either) so I reckon the 170 should have a lot of go smile

If cost is a factor, you could consider a well spec'd 140 GT and bank the difference and/or consider a crafty remap for about £300 up to 180bhp....

Not only that, but the powerband on the 170 seems to *start* at 2000rpm.
I had one for a test drive for a weekend and stalled it umpteen times, because it hasn't got enough torque to pull the skin off a rice rudding from idle.
I found this aspect of the engine very surprising (having never driven a diesel with no torque at those rpms before).
My *petrol* car is much better in this respect.

I can only recommend getting the dual clutch gearbox to get around it.

To be honest though it doesn't on this engine, on the old VAG PD engines it did, we have a Leon FR with the 170 engine and it pull smoothly to just about 5k, much more linear than the older 1.9's.

They do sound very noisy on idle however and as mentioned above at very low rpm i.e 1500 they drop off boost and are very sluggish. However compared to other diesel engines its pretty good and has a much larger linear powerband, the only downside being it doesn't 'feel' quite as quick as the PD's.

It will cost you £200 plus the loss in cash allowance you'd get otherwise ?

Make sure you're getting the DSG. Makes a whole heap of difference, saving the furious gear changes of the manual.

I had the heavy-ass 2008 Lancer with the 170hp PD, and you spent most of your time checking the speedo to tryy and rein the speed in.
