Since the weather was so nice earlier I went for a little walk to bask in the sunshine. Naturally did a bit of PH-twitching on the way. Didn't see anything nice bar an M6 rumbling past, but I did see a couple of (what seemed like) poor engine choices.

There's a BMW X3 around here with a 2-litre diesel. While 2 litres can be more than enough ( wink ), seems odd to have what seems like one of the smaller engines from a 3-series in a big heavy X3. There was also a Zafira 1.6, another odd choice of engine for a big car. Can't imagine hitching up 7 people + luggage and expecting the car to be able to cope on the motorway.

I suppose some of the newer cars, weighing loads with all their safety gubbins, have lacklustre engines too. Overtaking something in the old company car (1.8 Insignia) took forever, as the engine really struggled to haul the bulk. When I picked up four of my mates in a 1-litre Polo, it struggled to get anywhere too - and they were all girls so they (apparently) didn't weigh anything wink

Chrysler PT Cruiser - DOHC 2.0i or 2.4i petrols. Slower than a snail on valium, and a torque response curve which only gives any response betweeen 3,500 and 5,500 revs. Quite an achievement to make a car engine this crap.

Farkin stupid.

I've fond memories of a camping trip in a mate's 1-litre Polo. This was years ago and the car was ancient then. We were 3 up and of course the car was stuffed full of camping gear.

Everyone bar the driver had to get out when we (eventually) reached the campsite because it wouldnt make it up a slight incline to the pitch!

The Volvo V70 1.6L Diesel, 107BHP to propel a car weighing 1650kgs eek what were they thinking ?

ETA (I'd added 2 BHP extra by a mistake)

Luckily on all the models that have been mentioned they have fitted a gearbox.

I have to admit to owning a peugeot 406 diesel- 90bhp, not sure what it weighed tbh, but acceleration was very poor and even the slightest of gradients took there toll, proper barge.

VW Touareg 2.5 TDI. Seem like really good value when new but that's because you're only getting half an engine. Ruins a great car, the v6 diesel is so much better.

Or rather there are other gears than just top, but perhaps you misunderstood the concept anyway.

The Zafira 1.6 (admittedly 1st gen) is in my experience, not dreadfully slow - though obviously it is no speedy-gonzalez.

What!? So small cars that you can thrash about are pointless?

Well no, they can be great fun, but have the decency to get out of the way when someone in a proper car wants to get past. wink

I don't agree, if the following car is fast enough, the snail won't have to make way. But then again, I do have a 1.3 Fiesta hehe

Blimey, didn't realise those X3s weigh as much as they do.

Our 307 1.4 HDi is laughably sluggish. To the point where on a long journey on the motorway the economy is crap because your foot is on the floor all the time just to make make adjustments to your speed. banghead

Nothing can be as bad as a 1.2 8v Punto. I've found motorways that the OH's can't maintain 70 on.

Was this aimed at my Mini too?
