Trying to get a cheapo fun handling car for a bit of cheap expendable trackday fun......pug 306 gti is top of list, but noticed xsara vts's are a tad cheaper. Do they handle and drive like the 306 in the way that sporty saxo's and 106's are pretty much the same?

Apparently so, should be a bit cheaper and maybe less likely to have had a hard life too.

Even given that the Citroen is much better VFM and finding a decent one will be easier than a GTI6, i'd still rather hold out for a GTI6.

I had a Xsara VTS. Handling is almost the same, just *slightly* worse. But very very similar underneath.

If it is for the track then do it.

Alternatively, there is a GTI 6 on my street that appears to be dumped/not used for some time... could be worth picking up for a few hundred tongue out

I also think there is a little more to it, from what I've read the gearbox takes away some of the sparkle of the 306 though. The 306 is a great car though, I had a 306 for 12 months and loved it.

The five speed box gives it a normal turning circle too.

IIRC The Xsara is slightly heavier and has softer suspension. The 5spd box is of course the biggest difference though.

At least it will have character and flair . somethings german VAG's are devoid of.

The Rallye is lighter, but the GTI is within a few kgs of the Xsara. Official figures I've seen are 1215kg versus 1219KG

So the Xsara is slightly heavier then wink

Rallye is 60kg lighter without any options.

A friend of mine has one that he's tracked a few times (a few mods, but nothing much) and he said it was a hoot.
He bought it for exactly the reason you've mentioned, it has rather fallen under the radar in comparison to the 306 GTi.

His is for sale on PH! wink

Yes slightly tongue out

Avoid KJ51LZM if anyone is looking... you don't want that car.

They can be seriously cheap and as a result are becoming a very popular donor for us 205 owners, my engine is taken from one in fact, I have always been tempted by one as a daily hack but I just find them too ugly and anonymous to spend a lot of my time in laugh The 5 speed box does slow them down a little bit on acceleration I think (?) but if it is for track and going to be stripped then I would probably choose the Xsara over the GTI-6 purely for the cost difference.
