could be lots of things. Of the top of my head (andf starting with the easiest to check)
-battery gone flat in the time its taken you to swap the engine. There might be enough for lights, stereo etc but not enough to even turn the engine. Check with multimeter
-cables to the engine from the battery
-earth cable as mentioned above
-is the engine moving at all? Then check starter motor. You'll probably need to remove it onto a bench and test with a battery. Carefully...
If it turns nice and fast but no start, then its either fuel or ignition. Check ignition as that's more liekly to be a problem. Fuel is more straightforward
Finally, if its a modern: immobiliser??
