Which 'retro' chav-mobile?

i'm definetly not a chav, but i expect to get some flac for this post so i don't mind, But i love to see these old classics given new energy in the way of; slightly lowered suspension (if at all), black or white alloys and a probably a nice matt paint finish.

i want to do my own (cosmetic) tasteful mod, but i'm wondering what car people would rate as a better drive, better reliability etc out of the 3 listed below, as i have no experience with any of them but like the look of them equally.

Ford Fiesta xr2 (circa 1981)
Peugeot 205 gti (circa 1988)
VW Golf (circa 1980)

Far from chav choices I would say. Xr2 gets my vote. Had 5 of them and would buy another tomorrow if I had the cash.

Always fancied a 205 GTI but never been there, apparantly a better car to drive than the Xr2

i did contemplate the xr3i as an option but prefer the size of the fiesta/gti/golf's, nice and trim.

How about a Fiesta RS Turbo, when done properly they look rather nice. Not when they have 19" chrome rimz on them though! A set of Anthracite Compomotive M05s sitting nicely under the arches would be heaven!

Renault 5 turbo? Mental little death trap but the speed is surprising and the looks always strike me as being retro in a nice way.

Out of those choices, the 205 gti.

In my experience an Escort Turbo is a far better drive than the Fiesta. Had the Fiesta RS Turbo and RS1800 and they are the 2 least favourite car's that I have had.

MK2 fiesta's are way better to drive, they are like go-karts.

I can't comment from personal driving experience but i've had a play with one or 2 when i've been in the pug which handles rather well and they seemed nippy through the bends, may be down to having more power than me to pull out of the corners with but it was trying to lose 'em anyway. What is the rough power output on a standard-ish RS T anyway?

A standard Fiesta turbo should be 130bhp.

i remember a recent PHer posting a great pic of an 83 Astra s of theirs*, not over the top but nicely done, it got me into the idea of going for an older car and treating it to some new cosmetic touches.

Yep, Escort and Fiesta Turbo's about 130bhp. IMHO the Escort is far superior.

I have had a few of each and as much as I love turbo power, its the Xr2 that I want to buy again. Lots of fun for little money. From what I am told the 205 GTI is better than the Xr2 but I haven't experienced one yet so cant really comment

130? I expected more than that, the lad I had a little chase with must've done a bit of work to his then! I forgot about the Astra GTE, they are gorgeous for a retro chav mobile! Theres a midnight blue one with the C20 LET lump in around here that is in mint condition! They fetch a fair bit of money now though

Ideal world would be the Escort fitted with the EFI from the Fiesta.

My ideal world was an XR2 With the EFI from a Fiesta Turbo...





I had so much fun in that car and it did handle OK, but as a standard car the Escort Turbo was in a league of its own

With a chip, Cam and Exhaust my escort was running 195BHP and I trusted that car. 3rd gear was amazing lol

You don't see many Astra GTES these days sadly ( I actually saw one last week but any before then I cant remember)

Come to think of it when was the last time you saw a newer Astra GSI? There is one near me but other than that I haven't seen one for a couple of years now
