Car for the wife. I need help.

Professional help on the odd occasion...
So here's the scoop.
At the moment we have a family every day car, a 407 which to be fair is a great car for what we need it for.
I have a bike for some fun, but as the weather draws in i'm growing tired of getting soaked.
SO - i've said i'll think about a car for her in the meantime. Something small, something cheap, something safe as she'll cart about mini Davie_GLA in it.
She caught wind of a car that someone has, a Suzuki Alto which looks to me to have just scraped through on the safety side.
Anyway - the final thing is that it will be paid for monthly, either by loan, PCP, HP or whatever.
So i need the PH massive to assist me - you see adverts for brand new corsas for £103 a month but i'm sure there is either a hefty deposit or baloon payment in the deal.
I need ammo as apparently i'm going round the dealers at the weekend to 'see what's available'.
TIA,
D.

Depending on what mileage you do and how much you want to spend renault are doing some cracking deals at the moment. A particular one which caught my attention was the clio sport 200/cup versions. 2 door 2 litre. Rated as the best hot hatch at the moment and a euro ncap 5 i believe.
999 deposit or trade in and 205 per month for 2/3 years on a limited mileage agreement of 6k per year. You can i suspect alter the amount of mileage but then price per month goes up as well.

In which case ....

Similar price so if you haggle you could get a similar finance deal to the one i described above in which the dealer knocks 3k off the price for the deal to happen.
4 doors etc and no road fund license depending on which one you decide to go for.

Ok not quite as good as above but...

Oh i have also seen bmw dealers offerning 110 per month finance deals on 1 series bmw's though not sure what the actual deal details are.
You could if you were willing to get a two door hatch get an alfa mito for 150 per month with 1.5k down.
Key is to haggle.

OK,
I've managed to dodge this bullet for quite some time. But alas it's having to happen.
So, the rules have changed somewhat - no more monthly payments i want it bought and paid for.
Budget it no more than £2500 requirements remain the same but 4 door isn't so much of an issue any more.
With that, i've been through the classifieds and and can't seem to make my mind up. Over to the PH collective. I shall send 15 beer tokens to the best suggestion.

Small, cheap (to buy and run), and a hoot to drive.

Right.
We looked at a 147 Alfa today. I almost instantly fell in love but alarm bells are ringing!
It's very cheap at around £1500 at 70,000 miles but i have to see past it's appeal and think practicality.
Can someone please tell me this is a good / bad idea and especially tell me it's a good idea as it's lovely.
it's an Auto Selespeed Lusso whatever that is. Very well specified but again i'm cautious.
Thoughts?
David.

This word:
If it's anything like the other Alfa 'common problems', then my experience suggests it's more likely to be a matter of 'when' than 'if'. My 156 twinspark suffered from nearly all the problems they're prone to whilst I owned it, eventually breaking its balance shaft belt (well within its service interval) and rendering itself scrap. Having said that, those problems aside it was a fairly reliable car and pleasant enough to drive - I felt I'd had my value for money as I weighed it in!

All i would say is set aside 700 quid for the clutch just incase. The 147 was supposed to get a newer and improved sele box but they were still known to go wrong and are pricey to fix. Other than that provided its been maintained correctly and to spec shouldnt be a problem. We looked at a 147 Alfa today. I almost instantly fell in love but alarm bells are ringing!
