People who tailgate...
Discussion
If only it were that simple. If you were the victim of unprovoked tailgating where you weren't hogging a lane for no reason, and the person tailgating had no chance of overtaking, then I would probably agree with you.
But seeing as I drove down the A2 today with a long tailback in the fast lane, and eventually a guy in a Jag sitting in the fast lane oblivious of those tailgaiting and eventually undertaking, I can't help thinking most people who are tailgated are being so because they are not understanding the messages being given to them by other drivers.
Some people think its fine to use the fast lane rather like two heavy goods vehicles having a chat.

Yep, total knackers!
Had one just now, on my way home. I'm doing 45ish in a 50. Single carriageway, steady, constant traffic.
I'm sitting about 5 or 6 car lengths from the car in front. No rush, it's downhill, no turn-offs and you can see for a good mile or so. However, all I can see in my mirrors is some numpty in a Seat Ibiza buzzing around constantly.
WHY?! He can see the row of cars in front and the row of oncoming traffic, ruling out an overtake. What do they hope to achieve by weaving all over?! Panickers, the lot of 'em!
OOOH! I'm mad now, too. Let's form a vigilante gimp group.
Edited to fit in with the theme of the thread!

Indeed, but those behind the Jag shouldn't be tailgaiting should they? Would have thought a couple of full beams might wake him up, or failing that, FULL BEAM FULL STOP.
Generally it does annoy me but I think in some circumstances it can be part of the 'body language' of driving. If somebody is hogging an outside lane, seeing a Bimmer up their arse might make them realise and move over. That's the only situation where I don't mind it so much, although I suspect it often makes the lane-hogger more resolute in that traditional British fashion.
For the driver of the Pug 206 that was six inches from my bumper this morning on a single-carriageway in heavy traffic however - I'd be happy to see her fat arse violated by cylindrical justice.

I very rarely get tailgated by other cars (I reckon it's down to the car - if it's something that looks pretty quick etc the Base Germans appear to know their place in the pecking order and don't do it) unless I'm in the OH's little C Klass coupe when it becomes more evident.
I've actually had some extreme examples done to me when on my motorbike by car drivers when I've filtered past them and then the traffic has speeded up - they almost seem to try to barge me out of the way as they want their place in "the queue" back. I don't let it bother me.
However what REALLY f
ks me off is getting tailgated by artics - the hitch hiker murdering, fat, sweaty transvestite f
kwits don't seem to be able to drive their trucks without tailgating people. I've lost count of the times on the busy M62 when you see one of the dumb f
ks about six inches off the back of some woman in her little Corsa or whatever (and it's not like the poor souls can go anywhere - it's bumper to bumper 50mph stuff). IMO whether it's busy or not there's no excuse for that kind of thing when you're driving a 40 tonne vehicle. I take trucks tailgating me very personally - I regard it as an attempt on my life

depends on the lane hogger, i know my sister in law is a classic example, if you tailgate her even flash her to move out the way as shes going slow in the outside lane, she will intentially slow down to match the speed of the middle lane car to make sure you cant over or undertake!!! just to piss you off, flashing, beeping etc wont help!!!
Her excuse was that they shouldnt be speeding and if she wanted to go at this speed then she will!!!
needless to say i gave her a piece of my mind when i was in the car with her and she was doing this!!

Good post but really, fast lane? I'll probably get shot down here by the "perfect drivers" (especially because of my car!) but if I'm approaching for example a slow car in lane 2 of a DC with nothing on the inside I will continue approaching at a fair pace and pull close behind, I will then drop back to a 2 second gap.
I've found this approach shows the driver in front (if they are taking any notice) that I'm approaching at a speed greater than theirs. If you (as correct driving will dictate) see a car off in the distance and start reducing your speed gradually and just cruise slowly up behind them they probably think you're doing about their speed so why move out of their way.
In real life they just sit there no matter what you do and you just have to pass on the inside!

Why change a naming system that's been there since the motorway was invented, and is the clearest naming system, because some handwringer doesn't like the word fast when applied to a car?

Big E i understand your logic but whilst you accelerate (or closing speed) up behind them, they then at this point jump on the anchors for whatever reason then you be in trouble. I tend to just slow and sit at a safe distance until they wake.If no joy i position my car tighter over to the rhs of the lane, this can sometimes make the car infront more aware of you as more of your car appears in their door mirror. Other times nothing will work and you just have to sit it out and hope they're not going your way!I've found this approach shows the driver in front (if they are taking any notice) that I'm approaching at a speed greater than theirs.
