0-60mph has anyone actually tried it???
Discussion
Just curious as 0-60mph is banded about quite a bit in here, including a thread today "cheapest under 6 sec to 60".
But how many of you guys have actually
A) tried 0-60mph
B) timed it
Only curious as it's a lot harder to achieve IMO than what many think it is. Wheelspin, clutch slip and bogging down are all issues.
If I'm honest I have tested it in most of my cars and enjoy the thrill of trying and with easy to get apps for the iPhone and similar it makes it all the more fun too. But I accept it's no easy feat. My TR7 V8 makes over 200hp and weighs less than 1200kg (pos nearer 1000kg), but with short gearing, loads of torque and an open diff I'm yet to better 7.5 sec to 60mph in it due to wheelspin mostly.
All these claims if 'x' car doing it in 4.x or 5.x seem a little none real world to me. Same goes with some AWD cars, sure they are very quick. But if it's game over after 4 or 5 goes due to a busted gearbox, clutch or half shaft. Are they really as quick as thy first appear?

As to Subarus being able to hack the abuse and being quick? But how many of you guys have actually

Yes they are fast 0-60, just squat down and feck right off leaving me sitting, a fella I know has one and it is abused constantly and nothing has ever went majorly wrong. Cant believe the abuse it has taken.
From a rolling start it isnt that quick but up through 1st and 2nd its very rapid.
I am very very harsh on clutches in my car and usually get good 0-60 times for my cars by having absolutely no mechanical sympathy whatsoever.
Errr......Merc V8 launch = point at horizon and floor it. No need to worry about clutches, half shafts, drive shafts, excessive wheelspin, bogging down, etc etc. The way that test drivers max manuals is eye-wateringly brutal and not something I'd want to do to my own wheels.
Autos are often faster real world machines than manuals for that reason.

Did 0-60 in my caterham 7 in a Lotus 7 Owners club. Great fun, but....
The first year I managed 5.1 second and broke the diff. Managed to limp it home with a nasty knock noise. I did a cheap repair on the diff, and a year later...
I managed 5.0. Looking fot that sub 5 I had one last attempt and there was a very big bang - broke the gearbox - first gear was in lots of pieces. Trailered home. I fitted a new gear box and discovered that the diff was knocking again.
So thats 2 diffs and one gearbox.
I haven't tried 0-60 since- it seems an expensive hobby and I never broke the 5 second barrier.
Damn good fun, too many revs and definately excess wheelspin slowed the times down.

One way of doing this is to get a mate to record over your shoulder. That way you can watch it back and accurately read off the time it takes for the speedo to hit 60.
I have done this whilst driving (my mate recording) and also with a mate driving.
A bit of a primative way of doing it, but I found it easier to do that than using the stopwatch of my phone!

I do a full bore 0-60 style launch every time I start a race, but I have tried it in road cars, yes. Hire cars only though, never my own car!
The OP's right - most of it is about clutch control, gearbox abuse and tyre abuse. In my humble opinion, 30-70 is a far more reliable measure of a car's performance that would be felt each day by the driver, and sure enough I've tested all of my car's from 30-70mph.

Managed a best 0-60 of 4.7 secs IIRC, though a few were much quicker, 4.2 being achieved by many, the best was a 500bhp MR2 will a cracked head that still managed 3.6 secs.
Best thing was we shared the day with a BMW M3 club, and our cars consistently trounced their times, they were not a happy bunch
