Hi all, i am new here so go easy! i have just had my golf in the garage as my gear box and clutch have given up the ghost. It's on a Y plate and has only 90k on the clock. i was looking at selling.
As i can't afford to get the work done to get it back on the road how much do you reckon i would get to sell it without the repairs and are there people out there who would buy it in this state?

Cheers

I would reckon £600 - £800, probably better to break it for spares.

Cheers J4CKO, not the best of times, thanks for the feedback.

I would break and sell the parts. You'll get more for just the engine and interior (if it's half tidy) that for the whole car in that state.

It's in a really good condition, few bumps and scratches but nothing out of the ordinary for a car that age.

stick on ebay as spares or repairs (cheaper than listing as a vehicle sale I think) and see what you get - stick a decent reserve on so it doesn't sell for peanuts.

breaking is a better idea as long as you have the space/time to do it

Thanks for the feedback, looks like breaking it for parts seems the popular option. Are there people out there who could break it for me as i am not the best when it come to mechanical shizzle, computers more my thing i'm afraid.

take a few photos of the car as a whole and list it as buyer to remove - although it shouldn't be too much of a problem with a few screwdrivers and a decent socket set - just take your time! smile

The 6-speed GT TDi's had dual mass flywheels didn't they? The later ones certainly did, and they tend to eat them at quite an alarming rate.
If it's actually just a case of the flywheel throwing it's toys out of the pram then it's better to repair- the 6-speed VW boxes are tough and usually cheap on Ebay but I imagine fitting is a pain.

You'll never get close to a reasonable sum of money for it in broken condition- parting you might well make a decent sum, but it can be an absolute pain if you don't have an enormous garage, and no-one ever wants shells so you end up stuck with the heaviest and most difficult to get rid of bit.

When I helped my mate part out his 320i we ended up cutting the shell into about 6 pieces with an angle grinder and selling it for scrap, it having sat in his garden for about 6 months.

Working it is actually worth decent money. Even at trade level if a tidy one of these with under 100k comes through an auction private and trade buyers are almost literally fighting over it. I've seen ones of similar age with 150k which look like they've done Paris-Dakar and back fetch 2k+.

If it moves forward in 1st you could send it to auction but I think you'll have plenty of demand selling it spares or repair. Dealers are always on the lookout for cars like that.

The same garage that diagnosed the faults?. I wouldn't go for it. I have too many bad experiences to trust that they would not overstate the cost of repairs hoping to have the car off you for cheap. As has been mentioned, that car with that mileage is sought after and the garage will know this.

Have you tried the likes of Mr Clutch (I know I know) but they give a fixed price and as long as you can get it running long enough to sell! And have you considered a solid fly-wheel replacement, might be considerably cheaper than the DMF at little difference to vibration at idle by all accounts.

I am not surprised the guy from the garage offered £500, that way he knows he can put a single piece flywheel an clutch assembly that costs £200 in and shift the car for a healthy profit.

or get a kit from Valeo http://www.valeoservice.com/

Personally I doubt highly that the gearbox has let go at all. Clutch likely, gearbox unlikely. The derv 6-speed boxes are pretty much bulletproof- in fact people use the top ratios (5th and 6th) in other VW boxes to push top speeds up to insane levels (MTM's Bimoto had a theoretical top speed of something like 225mph with TDi 6th).

Get someone else to look at it- a busted dual mass should cost at absolute most about £600 to fix inc. labour, and that's if the clutch has gone with it.
