I had the misfortune of having to drive 200 motorway miles on both Sunday and Monday evenings.

At times there was mist in the air, although definitely not at road height and visibility of car tail lights was as good as it would have been on a clear night. The motorway matrix boards, however, said, "FOG". Because of this a reasonably large minority of cars had decided to put their rear fog lights on, leading to dazzling of other drivers (eg. Me. My eyes were quite tired from the glare by the time I arrived).

Do people not understand that a rear fog light is only of use if it aids your visibility to others? If it is not a pea-souper and you yourself can see cars 100s of meters ahead of you they are really not necessary.

Don't get me started on front fog lamps...

Later on, when all signs of mist had totally disappeared, a fair few cars still had their rear fog lights on -many of which appeared to be of the Fiesta, Clio and Ka variety and also appeared to be hogging the middle lane....

Incidentally, on the A34 in Oxfordshire, there were 3 significant accidents blocking the road within a couple of miles. When will people learn to leave a large enough gap between themselves and the car in front?

Nope but until the "Authorities" start to deal with such, as opposed to their fixation on "speed", nowt will change.

Been done to death a million times...people who use fog lights in slight mist are brain dead morons.
The only time you may need to use rear fogs is if it's foggy down to about ~50 yards visibility and there is nobody behind you - as soon as someone is behind you, you TURN THEM OFF YOU fkING BRAIN DEAD tt... FFS!
Front fog lights are just for aesthetics only. They serve no real purpose.

As for keeping a good distance...It's usually the stereotypical tts driving their German executive rep-mobiles who are too arrogant to grasp this simple rule.

Exactly. I used my rear fogs for a short time on a very foggy country lane whilst following a very slow-moving car (at a safe distance). When somebody came up behind me I switched it off.

I suspect that most people have never worked it out if they've not been told -I don't recall any mention of it when I was a learner.

No. It's just a subject that's been done to death. Resuscitated. Done to death. Resuscitated. Done to...

It's not exclusively those people though. Couriers in vans are bad for it too.

The fact is though, that most people don't leave even 2 seconds (barely adequate) in good conditions.

It happens because people have no idea of what the fog lights are really for and how to use them properly. I bet 99% of the population haven't looked at a copy of the highway code since passing their test.

There needs to be a loud "bong" every 5 minutes for front and rear lamps to stop their abuse.

As said above, until the police start dishing out points and fines, it will continue. Same with the snow on the roof affair; people didn't give a flying fk until the authorities mentioned fines. All of a sudden, cars are driving around correctly cleared, rather than a snow covered car with a window in the windscreen.

Fine every last one of them, I say. Absolutely no need for them to be on unless there's a peasouper.

Self-cancelling on a timer, say about one minute, would suffice.

What I can't understand is these people think the conditions are bad enough to warrant the use of rear-fogs, but still continue to drive at 70mph+.

In all honesty I've never seen a rear fog light. Is this some strange new modification?

A couple of times recently I've seen them on with no justification, and only on a few new cars (yes I'm looking at you Audi TT & R8) which have a 'cool' F1 style centre foglight.
I hope I'm wrong and the manufacturers aren't spawning a whole new breed of foglight wkers... I really hope I'm wrong...

It's a legal requirement and has been for quite a number of years...

Do you not know that the pressing of the rear fog light button makes a wee light come on. To you and I this says the fog light is on.
To a goon this signifies the forcefield has been activated and they will not crash. Turning this light off would be very foolish, and the safety of a goon is paramount.

I don't know about that. When visibility is particularly shocking, my front fogs give me a better low and wide beam that allows me to see the verge/kerb and centreline much better than I would without them.

I find that giving them a few flashes of the xenons makes 'em turn them off.

While being blinded in a slow queue into work I flashed etc and pointed down to the rear and mimed being blinded.

The daft bint then pulled onto the kerb and wound the window down. very politely I mentioned I was only telling her her rear fogs were on and dazzling people. Her response, well it is foggy..... Yes in a sort of fine mist with 1/2 mile viability in a 5 mph jam.
