Hi guys, just want to know what I can roughly ask for or expect off the price of a used Honda from a honda dealership?

I know what the margins are roughly in Australia but not here.

Don't want to make an unrealistic offer or pay too much.

Cheers.

Probably 10% or so off a Fireblade, less of a generator, but you should do well on a Mower in this weather.

how longs a piece of string is the correct answer

depends on the car, how used it is, how desprate they are, but crucially what its like price wise to start with.

£500 roughly but could be £0 to £4,000 ish on a big legend or something that is a bit of a clunker with no history etc

Buy my Civic as a 4 year old in 2002 (still got it) and a rough calculation got about err 0% discount. I got a new back tyre, service and an MOT on a bike that was worth less than half what I paid for the car at a Honda bike dealer and it wasn't a Honda either...

You won;t get a spare wheel eithermad

I bought a 2007 (57) Civic 18 months ago from a main dealer in the south east. It was up for £10,500 - I paid £10k. I did specify quite a few things to be done beforehand though including:

Bonnet respray (they are notorious for picking up stone chips)
2x New tyres
New windscreen (had a stone chip)
Service
12 Months Tax

I was happy to pay the £10k and left feeling I had driven a decent deal. It was a 2.2 CDTI EX with all the trimmings, including reversing camera. With all the extras I made the list price to be over £20k!!

So on a late model 08-09 car from a Honda dealership £500 would be the norm? You can usually negotiate much more off in Australia.

I tried to buy an 09 Civic which was on at £12,995. He offered the service plan which was £500 and the extended warranty which was £500. I offered him £13,000 all in and he said no way. Told me the car should have been £13,495 so the best he could do was £14,000. (I've heard that old chestnut before) I thought it was a good offer and especially when they hadn't sold a car all day. He let me walk though!

I just want to know if I am being reasonable.

In Scotland (Evan Halshaw in particular) some dealers are saying they don't negotiate at all! That's a new one for me. Are they having me on or are things really that different over here?

Hear from you soon,

Pints

I'm guessing prices for 2nd hand cars are a lot higher in Oz than over here. (There was a thread here a while ago about how cheap used cars are in the UK.)

It's not unheard of for dealers not to entertain used car discounts. You're more likely to get a discount from a main dealer, but you've no hope if you buy from a car supermarket.

Evans Halshaw try to be fixed pricing, as do Stratstone, same group.

When I worked for one of their Vauxhall sites, we were the test site for the programme, they called it Arazona a the time but changed it to UCM, or Used Car Marketing when it rolled out across all their sites.

The premise is simple.

When a car comes in, all recon should be done to it before hitting the pitch.

The entire sales team goes out in the mornings, looks over the car, armed with a printout from autotrader. If the car is Unique (ie none of similar age and miles or spec) within a 60 mile radius, its called an A car, and is priced at whatever the hell the sales manager thinks it should be.

If its got some competitors within that 60 miles, its a B car and is priced 3 - 500 below the nearest match. This is a B car.

If its not a great car, its a C car, which goes on as a Runabout. 30 days warranty, little recon done, that sort of thing. The premise is that a runabout is a car you would never retail, but wouldn't mind selling to a mate.

If its a nail, a full on moneypit, or an embargo list car, (french V6's, Yellow fords, that sort of thing, ANYTHING ROVER OR MG!) its called a D car and goes to BCA for disposal.

Once priced, a car sells for that price with fifty quid wiggle room.

You can tell how long a car has been there from the price too. Im trying to remember, (It was almost a year ago I last dealt with this!) a price ending in 1 means that its been on the site for less than 14 days, a 2 is 14 - 30, a 3 is 30 - 60 and a 4 is 60 days plus. I think thats right.

I hated the system, there is no fun selling a car for a fixed price. The haggling is half of the fun. I left when I realised how crap the system and the group was.
