evo magazine: ways to improve?
Discussion
If you were the publisher of evo, what would you do to improve it?
I'd do three things:
1). Consciously make it less Porsche-centric. I love Chris Harris and his writing but since he's come on board, evo seems to have become almost like a Porsche customer mag.
2). Get another humourist (not Zoltan Scrivener). Richard Porter does a job in his column but I find the rest of the mag a little po-faced. The magazine needs to reflect the fun that driving a fast car is. It rarely puts a smile on my face. Earnest, worthy, yes. Fun? Not so much.
3). More of the epic drive stories that Car used to do so well but now only seem to feature in Top Gear.
What say you?

1. stop refering to cars by cutesy nick names. A Renault Clio Williams is not to be referred to as 'Willy' (there are plenty more examples, but thats the worst)
2. stop telling me how good the writing staff are at driving and how many times they've wont this race or been in the business for years. just get on and write emotively about cars. past experience is only relevant when a driver is competing in an event for example.
3. get rid of the 'outsiders' section - its bit of a let down to have all the decent new cars, and then the nissan juke, os something similar that i have no desire to drive.
and yeah, more epic driving stories - there was a brilliant issue about a year ago about the 10 best cars and the 10 best drives. brilliant stuff.

How true! I'd consign "slippy diff" and "bent eight" etc to the same rubbish binTogether with the weak obscenities and toilet refences which are no substitute for decent writing.
Mind you, it'd be a big leap forward if all the staffers and other contributors weren't in the position of constantly having to brown-nose the boss man in the hope of keeping their jobs. If he bought a new wheelbarrow they'd all swear it had the best handling and greatest pedigree of any car they'd ever driven!
Write about the "The Thrill of driving" not the specification of the car.
Have become bored on quite a few articles recently, where they go on about statistics of the vehicle you check to see if your reading the brochure or not.
Then the descriptions about how the car performs are pretty obvious from the outset.
Used to much better when they described the environment they was driving in, and how the car was reacting and making them feel.

I love the drive stories - to me that escapism is where a physical magazine (preferably with a beer and a comfy sofa) will always have the edge over instant updates on car websites.
I'm a big fan of Henry Catchpole's stuff; I think he's got the Evo ethic very nicely sewn up.
Would maybe be nice to see a little more focus on affordable but fun machinery - 'Evoness' on a realistic budget - whether it's affordable new cars (i.e. hot hatches) or more exotic stuff second hand.

What I find odd is that Harris is always going on about how great Porsches are, but then when he buys his own cars he gets Ferraris and Mercs.
Personally I love Harris's bits - he has an enthusiasm about everything cars which just jumps off the page. Used to enjoy his videos too when he was on Drivers Republic.
To echo somebody elses comments, i'd like to see more driving stories and perhaps a couple more accessible car grouptests.
Cheers,
Rob
