Do you carry a "winter kit" in your car?
Discussion
Even though we all knew this was going to happen and we all knew it would be a nightmare on the roads - it's only beginning of 2010 this all happened before - drivers are still going out with nothing more than their normal clothes on and no food or water.
I have a collapsable shovel, wellies, wooly hat, gloves, big coat, over trousers, 5 foil blankets, water, torch, sleeping bag and those tyres we're not allowed to mention and food.
So what do you have?

I have a big bag of grit, a shovel, a pair of snow socks, a goretex jacket, and a blanket. Reading your post reminds me that somewhere I have a foil blanket, so I'll be looking for that today.
Truth be told I won't be driving much for the next few weeks so shouldn't get stuck anywhere.

Full size garden spade, a handful or road salt ... 2 squares of offcut carpet!!
I had summer tyres and was getting stuck left right and centre, the carpet was all i ever needed!! Got me out of all sticky situations!
I had snow socks, they got me out of one situation ... and they died!
Managed to get Toyo Snowproxies and the difference is crazy!! The gears never been out the boot since!

Yes I always go over prepared, but yesterday getting stuck behind a crashed BMW and a coach on the M40 southbound for ages made me glad I had enough food and water for 48hours, two sleeping bags, foil blankets, flourescent snap stick lights, matches, small camping stove and pot for cooking, along with few other bits, tow rope, folding shovel etc, I stopped to help dig an old 3 series out at one point as it was blocking lane 1 and it was causing more issues by people trying to drive round it.

Autosocks, fleecy blankie, spare coat, hat and gloves, telescoping shovel, bag of cat litter, de-icer spray (can't reach to scrape), shoe chains for PA
Plus my normal emergency kit:
few bottles of water, flapjacks, wheelchair waterproof (rockin' the giant-blue-condom-on-wheels look), spare catheter, gloves, bags, feeding tube kit, bottles of tube feed formula, handful of 60ml syringes, couple of days worth of meds, short and long folding ramps, phone charger, high-vis vest, load of Allen keys.
I only tend to use my Focus in this weather.
In the back there is 5L concentrated screen wash, all my site gear, spade, collapsible rubber headed broom for clearing snow, and a bag of grit. It's all I've ever needed - the heavy diesel in the front gives plenty traction over the front tyres.
I stick to main roads and avoid ox tracks - I don't run a disco on oversized suspension, so why try and be Scott of the antarctic?

Slightly off topic, but how f
king annoying are the connections on those nutricia pump tubes? Really hard to undo.Torch, spare batteries, car tool kit with gaffa tape, fuses, bulbs, spanners, sockets, tyre weld, radweld, mini compressor, 10l jerry can of petrol, snow chains, gloves and rubber mat for fitting snow chains, foil blankets, screen wash, auto transmission/power steering fluid, engine oil, red flare, 6 ton tow cable, and probably some more stuff I've forgotten about.
Truck lives in the Austrian alps in the winter, so it's more than ready for this bit of a dusting.

I've had a sleeping bag, bottle of water, and some chocolate bars in the boot of my daily driver for a month now. Always take my winter coat too in addition to the fleece I wear to work anyway. Wear decent boots too.
Stuff like a shovel and grit sounds like a good idea. Been meaning to add some more food supplies too. (I keep eating the chocolate bars on the way home though
)Was certainly glad to know I had my 'kit' yesterday when I sat for 4hrs on the M1. Was seriously thinking I'd be spending the night at one point. A full tank of fuel was very reassuring too!! I'm certainly going to stop running for as far as possible between fill ups during this time of year.
I have an inflatable penguin, a book on wristwatches from the 1960s and 1970s, a broken microwave, a colander and half a packet of Monster Munch that I opened in July.
Sorry, you were all being far too sensible for my liking. I have a very basic set of tools, gloves, cardboard and old trousers (the last two for the purpose of jamming under my wheels should I get stuck).

Excellent work!
In the back of the fourbifour, I have,
2x24hr ration packs
4 season sleeping back
Snow shovel
One ring butane gas camping cooker and mess tins
Water and fruit juices
Torches and spare batteries
McMurdo Parka
30 litre plastic jerrycan of fuel (with pourer. You'd be amazed how many forget that!)
Babywipes
First aid kit.
Rather be overprepped than underprepped!

Ohmigodyes. Um. Think they take Motability customers?
Hmm. Anybody want a project to make my Sprinter a bit more like that? ~winning smile~ I can pay in gratitude, beer and pizza...
I don't tend to do the tubey stuff myself 'cos my hands are a bit weak and sore, - PAs (support people rather than secretaries!) do it on all but the odd occasion, that said they're not usually too bad, I keep little offcut scraps of that brilliant non-slip matting stuff around. What is a bugger is dishwasher-ed syringes, bit of a design flaw there

You a member of the extra orifices club then? Or just know one?
