Coke or Choke? Most of my cars and bikes had a choke, it was all the rage in the good old days. I sometimes had a Diet Coke in there as well.

All my early cars (mainly Cortinas & Zephyrs) had a manual choke.

IIRC, the first auto ones (water temp based) on carbs were horrendous and sticky.

Don't miss them though, just get in and start it now without hassle.

My first car, a 92 Toyota Starlet 1.0 had a 4 speed gearbox and a manual choke, surely this must have been one of the last cars available with one?

I never have, I think I'd forget to put it on/off if I ended up with a car that has one now. I remember my parents car having one when I was younger it was either a Ford Escort or Ford Fiesta can't remember which one now.

My old Volkswagen diesel has a 'Cold Start Handle'!!

You pull it a few mm and the idle speed goes up by 50rpm.

A few more mm and it idle speed goes up by 150rpm (200rpm in total)

The remaining 90% of it's travel adjusts the timing of the injector pump.

If the ambient temperature it below 0 degress, it'll run terrible without if being used for the first 1/4 of a mile or so.

Back on topic, all my Alfasud's have had a manual choke.

Not only do I still use a choke, I still have the traditional British Leyland 1970s solution to crappy parts quality.

Not only did my first car or two have a choke, one, (or both) had a little lever on top of the pan style air cleaner, that said "winter/summer". WTF?

Had loads of cars with them, although the ones with auto chokes tended not to work at all (especially my mk.4 Cortina, which would flood the carb on a regular basis)

Gives a car character in my experience. Much better than cursing the autochokes which never worked (on old Fords anyway, many being converted back to manual choke).

My chainsaw has a manual choke now, still love the balancing act. biggrin

I was hoping it was for air shocks so you could adjust ride height to suit road conditions.
