I'm after something like a VW/Audit/Seat/Skoda 1.9 tdi - size relatively uninmportant - will consider a Polo or a Passat shape

must have air-con and nearer enough 12month MOT, pretty flexible about everything else - would like something capable of circa 50mpg for long trips

Mileage absolutely not an issue - as long as there is evidence of regular servicing

Absolutely nothing french

Is there anything obvious I'm missing?

Cheers

Octavia octavia octavia. All day long. My 110 tdi has cruise and air con. Cost me 2k 2 and a half years ago with 77k on clock. Now on 160k and has needed little more than service items and a couple of CV joints. Been utterly reliable and get a calcullated 50.8 to the gallon.

all VAG TDi's are fairly good with the exception of the 150bhp PD - its significantly less reliable, and really not much quicker than the bomb proof 130

I'd have the Mondeo or the Octavia out of Chris's very helpful list.
Just make sure the Mondy has had the clutch and dual mass flywheel replaced or its a £750.00 bill to come. Brilliant driving car though.

The 1.9 TDI is a bit rough - our A3 1.9 TDI made a lot of noise, but didn't really go anywhere...

Stretching to a 140hp 2.0 is a much better idea, if you can.

Early 2.0TDi engines are a world of hurt. Injectors, porus heads, breaking engine mounts. Unless you're buying a 2.0TDI built in 2007 or later, then go with the 1.9TDI every time.

Our '55 plate 2.0TDI did 112k, with no issues.

To be fair, 112k isn't much for a diesel. If it had done twice that without issues, it'd be more impressive. The 2.0 is quieter and smoother than the 1.9 but they're widely regarded to be less economical and less reliable.

Budget is a max of £1800. Mmm. Nice. I really like the look of the Bora.

sorry for the delay
go for a "SE"..they are fully spec'd
the engine is a real peach, a mile away from the VAG powered cars I looked at before I realised these were in the same price band (I had 3-4k to spend on a diesel).....the seats and cabin are as you'd expect from a Volvo (very comfy and a lovely place to spend the miles)
don't be put off by high mileage, as long as you have service history these cars are good for it

you are looking at around £3k for one

any specific questions please feel free to ask smile
