Been looking at head units recently, and just came across this after being linked to it on themgzr.co.uk
http://www.dynamicsounds.co.uk/sony-dsxs100-cdless...
Basically, its a headunit without a Cd player, plug in your device, it goes inside the machine and reads off and charges that.
The performance is alright for the price. But what i'm thinking is, is it too early to be switching to a HDD only device? with no CDs?

Why would it be 'too early'? I can't see any downsides to it. It gets rid of the pain-in-the-arse-ishness (technical term) of swapping CDs round all the time smile

I've had an Alpine unit without a CD player for a couple of years now, cant rememebr how I lived without it! Plays countless thousands of songs from my Ipod, and saves having about 50 CD's rattling around the car.

One of these;

But theres things like just borrowing a Cd from someone, it has to be loaded onto PC then moved onto USB/iPhone.

Moreso a pain in the ass for me as my laptop has an external CD-RW drive that needs its own power source hehe

How about waiting for one of these. You would have to borrow a CD as you say it and it plays it.

They way I see it, Sony come up with good ideas. Where as Alpine make ideas good, and do it well.

It's been good thus far, still using the cars original speakers though, not a high end system. Handles a fairly diverse selection of music without lacking in any noticeable area though.

If the build quality and materials are anything like the Parrot handsfree bluetooth kit I installed in my wife's car I would stay well away from it.

I had an Alpine similar to the one posted above and the sound quality was superior to any headunit I have owned previously or since I sold it. I only got rid because I fancied a double DIN unit.

With thousands of songs loaded on my ipod I honestly never missed having a CD slot. If anything it was a bonus as no-one could ask you to play their rubbish music on a long trip. hehe

I've heard similar on the Parrot kit, and its bluetooth compatibility has been somewhat suspect. Have also heard some issues with certain phones causing the parrot kit to crash (!!!!!)

I'm currently running the "original" IDA-X100, colour screen, iPod/USB only. Had it for a few years, and its absolutely perfect. UI thats better suited to the road than the iPods native interface. Very highly recommend any of the Alpine range.

I looked at the sony unit too good idea but i prefer the idea of a rear usb lead so i can plug anything i want in to the headunit not just ipod/mp3 players like a 500gb HDD and hide it out the way too.

Hmm, how much roughly would the Alpine fabric posted be? Or something similar.

If you are not bothered about pre-amp outputs to run external amplifiers you can get an iDA-X311 for about £150.

also comes with red illumination

If you absolutely must have CDs there is the CDE-112R1 for slightly less, but I have no clue about the sound quality.

Had a little trip to halfords today, there's a nice kenwood that's been there changing from 200/170/180 etc.

Down to £89.99 smile sorted. Works perfectly with my iPhone 4 and sound quality is rather good too!

Good news. I have had Kenwood in the past and always been pleased with them. At that price you will be too.

This one? Interesting... I wonder if it has a graphic equaliser or will be compatibale with the dash buttons on an S2000 since it is the same make? Tempted to get something to improve the sound quality of the standard stereo, already have a sony head unit doing nothing but the dash buttons don't work with it or so i'm told.

How about this.

Don't know what the quality is like but it has all the features of the other two but at half the price. Very tempted to buy one of these for my Seat Arosa run around.
