What makes me sick about these union leaders is their assumption that all their members support them in their political agenda. I'm a Unite member and politically opposite to this t
t - unfortunately I do not have any say in his views. The unite membership is undoubtedly weighted in favour of labour supporters but being also a white collar union I'd be very surprised if there wasn't a health percentage of members that do not agree with his views.
In my opinion there should be legislation banning the political aspects of unions - if Red Len wants to be a politician let him stand for Parliament (and let's see how far that gets him). Unions should be representing ALL of their membership not just the percentage that suits them. Just hope Mr Cameron has a little of Mrs Thatch's backbone

Maybe feeling the pinch of the 'short dipping' perk being removed?
A friend was an accountant, and one of his clients ran a garage and petrol station.
The petrol station consistently lost lots of money, and my friend asked if the petrol was being 'short changed' on deliveries.
(The tanker drivers dipped the tank levels and reported on what they had delivered.)
The client said the guys could be trusted, they had been delivering for years.
A few weeks later one of the tanker drivers turned up last thing in the afternoon, offering him 700 gallons at something like 35p a gallon.
Knowing that the tanker could not return with product, the garage owner said 'no'.
It turned out that he had been short delivered for years, and a rival station had been getting 'bargain' fuel.
He got rid of the petrol station shortly afterwards....
I think new metering arrangements may have helped stop this scam, so the poor wee souls must be feeling the pinch.
(I bought some garden stuff from a tanker driver, and as it was heavy I was back and forward to his house over a few weeks collecting it. He had 6 cars, including a Dodge Ram, a 'Miami Vice' type boat, and various other motorbikes, quads, and tractors. He must have had quite a fuel bill......)

Tanker drivers are on a seriously good screw compared to other HGV/Class 1 and 2 drivers.
That said, with a bit of overtime, the drivers at the depot I work at can earn close to £30k.
I know first hand just how damaging unions can be - I think anyone who works in a distrubition centre will know what I mean.

£40,000 a year is what could be earned by fuel tanker drivers but not by many other truckers. 40k sounds a lot until you divide it by upto 71 hours a week.Would you want to drive a mobile bomb for a living I know I wouldn`t.

king truck around and don`t get anywhere near 40k a year, before you start calling all truck drivers just think on, how do you think you car got to the dealers, drove it`s self there, or how did the bog roll you wipe your mouth on get to the shop.
It`s not the drivers it`s the idiot union Unite that are wrong, the leaders still think they are a younger version of Scargill.

if they're not representing you, withdraw your support. I recall "closed shop" arrangements were done away with by Maggie.

What bugs me is the people who slag all truck drivers of thinking we all earn 40k+ a year, I don`t and probably never will, and how many of these knockers would do it for 40k and sleep in a cab for 5 nights a week, none. I know fuel tanker drivers earn good money but then again they deserve it.

Despite the issues they cause me - and believe me, they're not minor ones - I've nothing against their existence. You're forced to keep on your toes, keep up to date with what's going on and they act to discourage complacency amongst management.

As far as the motor industry and manufacturing are concerned, it was the great old British management that lead to their demise. Their lack of foresight and modernisation, the self preservation of shareholders and general ignorance to what the rest of the world was doing killed them.It's about time people learn their place in society.
As far as I'm aware, the mining industry was doomed because it was becoming increasingly uneconomical to do so. Far cheaper to import coal and hope the miners would find work elsewhere or pay them benefits than to continue national state-owned mining.
BTW, I'm not a red or a blue/yellow/XYZ colour, I've just done plenty of research into manufacturing in the past. HTH
That said, according to an interview with Andrew Marr this morning, it seems David Cameron is currently looking into the viability of a fuel price stabiliser to avoid the country running into any more trouble on this, so maybe pressure from the unions should bring it about more quickly.
However, a lot of union politics annoys me. Education experts have been saying for years that our education system is far too biased in favour of academia, and that in order to compete with other countries and to give more young people a fair chance in life, we need more vocational qualifications and options in state education.
The Tories announce they want to open a new generation of technical schools and the NUT's immediate response is 'this will create a two-tier education system'. This is their riposte to every single tory education policy regardless of whether it's actually what they've been asking for for years.
Goes back to a post I wrote the other day about people who don't actually listen to words used, but concentrate on body language and general theme instead. Same goes for the tuition fees debacle. Why are there people complaining that they're going to have to save up to pay more? The new arrangements mean an end to up-front costs? They only say that because they haven't listened. What they should be getting up in arms about is being asked to pay more for less due to departmental cuts.
