Slightly cross threaded an inlet Mani bolt. Hoping it's the nut and not the bolt. Going to try a new nut. If it is the bolt would I be able to file the dmafed thread off and start again? Or will this make it worse?

If you know the size and have a local engineers supplies buy a die nut to re run the thread on the stud, replace the nut anyway.

You will be able to get a new stud anyway but yes, you could use a thread file and new nut.

Use a Tap or Die and cutting compound depending on whether it's the nut of the stud that's gone.

Seconded, if it's only a bit nerfed, run a die down the stud and it should be fine.

This has cheered me up- thought if I knackered the bolt it'd be well and truely knackered. Think I'll get all the others bolted down n then take it to someone with more skill than me to run a die down it

Cheers

If you try to run a die over a damaged thread there is every chance you will make the damage the whole length of the thread. The best thing for a damaged thread as someone else said is a thread file, this can ride in two or three undamaged threads to act as a guide to remove the misplaced material.

A die might run the route the misplaced material wants it to, thus crossthreading the whole bolt. Once filed use a die to finish up, or you can use a needle file to remove the burr and then "die" it.

A die nut, not a die, thats why god invented them.
