What is the ultimate "camping" car ?
Discussion
I have been pondering the question of what is the ultimate camping car for a while now and have not come up with the answer yet. When i say camping car it's to carry camping gear round and not sleep or cook in. I carry a fair bit of stuff when i go camping with the mrs, as i love sleeping and cooking outdoors but with a bit of comfort.

This was all the kit i packed in my V50 a couple of years ago. There was not an inch of space left in the back.

This was my camp last year and it seems to grow every year.
The kit i would like to add would be a larger bbq and 2 mountain bikes.
I think the ultimate camping car is going to be a compromise in everyway. Here is my list of what it should be able to do:
1) Have a large enough load area to store all of my camping equipment plus be able to carry 2 mountain bikes in someway.
2) Be able to cruise at 80mph with relative comfort for the 2 passengers (for the trips to the south of France etc.)
3) Be reliable (don't want to breakdown in France)
4) Be relatively economical on fuel, over 30 mpg ??(for the trips to France)
5) Able to be used as a daily car (so it doesn't sit on the drive most of the year) or be dirt cheap keeping point 3 in mind.
6) Be able to be driven round and parked quite easily once at the camping destination for days trips etc.
I'm sure there should be more points but the can add them later as they are thought up. Lets hear your ideas !!

Think we should add point 7:2) Be able to cruise at 80mph with relative comfort for the 2 passengers (for the trips to the south of France etc.)
3) Be reliable (don't want to breakdown in France)
4) Be relatively economical on fuel, over 30 mpg ??(for the trips to France)

6) Be able to be driven round and parked quite easily once at the camping destination for days trips etc.
7) Able to get to any field/campsite and not get stuck in mud/snow
Anyway:

1) Check
2) Check
3) Modern Ones are ok, easily fixed/bodged too, so check!
4) Diesel one if careful, yep!
5) Plenty of Defenders used as a Daily Driver, so Check!
6) Park it anywhere, no bigger than a normal car, added advantage of being able to park where others can't! Check!
7) err, check!

End of Thread!

Everything for 2 including folding kitchen, stove, gas, tables and chairs, 6 man tent, food, clothes, boots, rugs, duvets etc etc
Can you really achieve 30+ mpg?Everything for 2 including folding kitchen, stove, gas, tables and chairs, 6 man tent, food, clothes, boots, rugs, duvets etc etc
In all seriousness, at sensible (read legal) motorway speeds it's rather good on fuel. Late 20's easily.
Crikey, just how much stuff do you need to go camping with? I do quite a bit of camping (mainly wild but some sites too) with mates and the girlfriend, but when it's just me and her we get everything we need for a week, including food (coolbox plus dry goods box), cooking/evening firewood/fuel, drink (always plenty of drink!), tent, sleeping kit, rucksacks, fire/cooking bucket plus gas backup, clothes, boots, music etc, etc, basically everything you need for a week of camping in which we eat really well, drink plenty and are comfortable, and we get all this into the boot and back 'seats' of a Mercedes SL500 (R129 model) which means after we've set up site we can cruise around enjoying the beautiful scenery of Scotland. To be fair I reckon we could do a week of touring/camping pretty much anywhere in Europe with the set-up we've got.

Buy a roof box and bike rack and keep the Volvo?
Oh, that's the other thing. By the time you've driven to the south of France (for instance), the extra drag and therefore fuel use caused by two bikes on a rack means you could quite happily hire a bike down there and it'd work out cheaper...Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
