Please help me decide!, I know its a boring choice but I do have a motorbike to at least attempt to redress the balance...

New job means 20,000 miles a year of motorway driving - hence diseasel.

Any experience or advice greatly received

Many Thanks

If there's only you to carry around, why pick the A6? It's huge!
Mondeo is remarkably competent. Don't know about the V50 but my V70 is lovely and averages about 43mpg (mixed driving). Don't know about the Passat either.

Which one fits you best? Nothing worse than a car that doesn't fit. It's like buying ill-fitting shoes and walking for a living.

Matehad a Volvo V50 as a company hack for a couple of years and it was very nice. I drove it a few times and for its size etc, it felt quick enough. 300lbft of torque manages most situations nicely.

Spec'd with the swivel headlights it was great at night!

New? Second hand?

I've never heard of the 'total dick' trim level in the Passat!

Although you haven't specified if it has to be those because it could be a company car etc, i'd be inclined to buy a reliable older car instead of shelling out. My 2p worth smile

Looked at the beemers, but for the money I thought the trim level was lacking and the consensus is (from everyone at work who has one) once the snow falls abandon all ye hope!!.

Have driven the volvo and the mondeo, the mondeo seemed very big inside and drove nicely, the volvo a little smaller and the volvo felt more prestiguos.

Havent driven the passat yet, but they seem common as muck - a good sign if there are lots of them as it may mean that they are the popular choice.

The Total dick inside trim level comes from (well PH obviously) black passat saloons and estates that seem to drive like they have sat on a wasp ( until the inevitable flattening of the torque curve....CHANGE.....) and also seem very angry with the world in general. I have experienced this a lot whilst out and about which is putting me off owning one as I could quite easily resemble that remark.

I currently drive an A6 although its older, has 220bhp and is a quattro so this will be a step down performance wise.... I also like the interiors of audis but the purchase price is higher and the depreciation worse.

The car will be a privately owned 2nd hand car of 1,2,3, years old- we have a maximum age of 5 years on our car policy so the older the car at purchase the quicker I have to get shot.

I hope that helps and I appreciate any input on the models shown!

I chose the Volvo (well, we bought the D4 version). Perfectly competent on the motorways but the big advantage for me is that the R-Design interior the nicest place to sit of all of them.

I clicked Volvo because I am slowly developing a blinkered Volvo fanboyism, and they have bloody good stereos and seats.

Out of that list I would go for the Passat, but would take a 520d for motorway duties over all of them.

I looked at the V50 a couple of years back - as far as I could tell, it's largely a Focus underneath, hence feeling smaller than the Mondeo.

Volvo is the most comfortable. Mondeo the best to drive away from the motorway. Passat is the most boring. Mate of mine has the audi and he feels underwhelmed by the whole thing and it didn't impress me as much as previous audis. Plus audi drivers now have the BMW reputation! Including my mate, when I had to remind him that we were in the 30mph limit around my town when he was doing 50.....

First the caveat: I haven't driven any of them, but assume for what you want they're all much of a muchness. And as you say you have a bike for the fun bits.

Personally I'd struggle to justify paying more for a more "premium" brand (although Volvo seats are meant to be ace), so I'd be looking at a 3 year old Octavia.

well I'm on my second V50 so guess which one I would vote for from that list.

Problem with the V50 is that it is quite small and cubby space is quite limited. There are some threads in the Volvo forum where people have contributed their ideas, I would post a link but this damn phone don't know how to do it.

In summary both V50s had the 2.0D 4 pot TDCi. First one 6 spd manual, current one 6 spd Powershift, volvo version of VW twin clutch auto DSG. That is one awesome transmission.

Neither car has been any problem over many many miles, and after a prev Mondeo the dealer network has been a revelation.

The only problem which springs to mind, the first one had leaks on the headlight washer seals, supposed to be using too strong additive, doubtful but done under warranty, and the current one has an annoying buzz on the airbag casse, which stops with a touch, but dealer has not fixed it.

The current one is doing about 48 mpg day in day out, brim to brim, easily over 50 long runs, the prev one a mile or so less, yes the auto is more economical.

However when this comes up for replacement will I get another one is debateable. Rumour is it will be discontinued, volvo on the one hand says not, but on the other hand says the C30 will be upsized to make a small saloon / estate which will replace the V50.

If that happens then the natural choice will be the V60, but if you see my thread in PH volvo forum you will see what I think of that.

That gives me the choices you have plus some others.
Mondeo - hate
Audi - don't hate as much but put off by cock label
Passat - total dick inside - LOL that hadn't registered with me tbh but that is the next option,

However the other two options for me would be

Octavia, and am seriously impressed just how good a wafter the Superb Estate is.
We have a Skoda Fabia runaround and more and more of the job cars are Octavias, very impressed and dealer good too, they even advised me exactly how to fix one job on the Fabia myself.

Another vote for Skoda over here. They were still a bit flaky when VW first took over but their most recent offerings are up there with the best.
