I'm looking at buying a car for the wife, she only commutes 3 miles per day and is currently off work till september. It needs to be able to fit 3 child seats across the back and be larger than my e91, be able to travel to south france each year, plus as economical as possible. I have about 6k so at the moment thinking c4 picasso 1.6 hdi....anyone got any better ideas?

Don't take this the wrong way, but 3 miles a day by car?! Why's that?

I live on a 'b' country road, so no buses and during comuting hours fairly busy/dangerous. The 3 miles only takes 5 minutes but you couldn't really cycle and so car only realistic choice.

In that case I'd say you've already answered your own question smile

Seat Altea/ VW Golf Plus 1.9 TDi, Mercedes A180/ B180 CDI?

All roomy inside, economical and do-able for £6k

...but I think if only doing 3 miles a day a petrol car would be best, diesel engines aren't meant for such low mileage

Ordinary estate and one of those "3 child seats in a row" pieces of kit recently advertised.

Although you are not going to get 3 abreast child seats in an A class, I had enough difficulty getting two in when I last visited a friend down south and took her and her sprogs out for the day. The Altea however does sound like a good bet.

Can you get 3 across in an altea? Looks like the middle seat is not full size....

Having never driven or been in one I wouldn't know (although did look at one when the other half and I were looking for a replacement for the 206) but from what I could make out, there is plenty of interior space but the only real way to know is to go along and try it out.

I think your right. Narrow down the search to a few cars then go and see. Might look into petrol as short term cheaper but longer term potentially more reliable.
