"couple" cars, how did you arrive at the decision?

i keep seeing posts in threads referring to "the wife said no to buying X car" or similar and was just curious. if anyone here has a car between both partners, what was it that swung you to the decision of going for a more expensive car with compromised ownership/use instead of a cheaper car that's your own choice?

Needed a car, I wanted something fun, he wanted something better than the 206 (who can blame him) and was doing the majority of the driving at the time, so we ended up with the A-Class(his choice as he was doing more driving than I) as our principal car with the 206 as an emergency back up, fast forward 3 months and I end up driving more so we get the Saab.

I research, choose and find a good example of what I want. I buy it, usually without consultation (althoughif I've been indiscreet she may have an idea what I'm up to by this stage).
I turn up at home in it and present her with it as a gift.
She hits me.
I register it in my name.
Job's a goodun.
She's not liked the MR2, the 200SX or the 328i I've bought her so far, but I'm sure shell love an Elise or a Cerbera.
In all honesty, she's liked 'my' cars. She has a company car which I chose the first one - Fabia 1.4 Tdi whih we agreed was brilliant, and she chose a kermit green Mazda 2 1.3 which is proving much harder to like.

I wanted an Evo 9/WR 1. Was told point blank that SHE would not drive a car with, and I quote: A stupid, chavvy looking spoiler & a car with a hole in the bonnet because the engine would get wet. 
We compromised on a hatchback, but she needed to have 5 doors & be comfortable diving it. I needed to have a bit of poke under the bonnet & be a bit diferent. We needed a large boot for the pram & baby stuff.
We ended up with a 2.0TFSI Leon Cupra (with a stage 2 remap which I never told her about
)
Sold it after 6 months of crashy, pot hole seaking ride for something more suitable as a 1 car solution (Passat estate).
Weekends away, Tip runs, caravan towing, camping trips & eating motorway miles are now no problem & I'm getting double the MPG.
In fact, we have yet to breach the load liner when going away which usually has us lugging VB Jr's & Mrs VBs mountains of stuff!
It keeps the Mrs happy, so I can concentrate on the bikes- much easier to hide in the garage

Similarly, I told the O/H we were getting a TVR Chimaera.

She does moan a bit when I give it beans, but thankfully I can't hear anything over the engine anyway. Occasionally she also moans about continually having to convert our joint bank account into noise and spare parts, but ultimately if she was some tree-hugging liberal I wouldn't be living with her in the first place.
Women. Know your limits.

I agreed to have the 'family' car as my car as long as I could have a backup (1969 Porsche 912) for the weekends. I picked a Octavia vRS and after she got over badge snobbery she really likes it. And she kept her S3.
Until it got written off.
Then She wanted another Audi or a Golf, on my suggestion she looked at an ST3 and now has one of those. She loves it.

The car was bland, bog standard VAG dullness, same interior as the Mk1 A3/Mk4 Golf, same engine, same floorpan. We basically compromised; I had my eye on an MX5 but was told we needed something more practical, so had to keep shopping around until we found something which she liked but I didn't dislike. Ended up at the Toledo because I liked that they're relatively rare, and she liked the way it looked. I got so tired of its dullness and she got really tired of me complaining about its dullness, so in the grand scheme of things it wasn't a good plan. I swapped it for a dog of an E34 530i V8 and loved it
When I say "got a loan", it wasn't a big loan! We now have our own cars, she has a Rover Metro (because it was free) and I have my E30. In the future I think we'd both be a bit more concious of each others preferences, so I wouldn't rule out joint buying again. If one of you is a petrolhead and the other isn't, there's going to have to be a compromise somewhere.
