SO I book in for a test drive for myself and my wife to test drive a new car. Make and model unimportant as I think this is a story told many times. We get to the dealership and 'greeted' by a receptionist reading her book who seemed bothered about being disturbed by us. Told the bint we had a test drive booked with Dan. "Dans not in today". "I booked it with him. For 11am" "Nothing in the book, sir"
Relunctantly taken over to another salesman who gave us a look of complete disinterest. Told him what we were looking for. We went on a test drive. He barely spoke a word. We got back and he opened up a bit. As it turned out, we really liked the car and told him we are looking at this and just one other car (competitor). He did the sales bit and all seemed good to us. So we are primed for a sale. "I'll get Dan to call you" " Yes please". That was over a week ago...

WTF is wrong with my money and indeed with these people? Who is getting all their attention? I have money ready to spend, I just want to do a good deal and the money is theirs. Not interested. Why is it like this? I can't get my head around this and I know its tale told all the time. I hate to give these people our hard-earned money. Tossers!

I'm sure there is nothing wrong with your money, do you want to buy the car? If so call them up and do a deal and buy it.

I gave up expecting a good experience when buying cars years ago, having said that the last 2 occasions were pretty pleasant.

Good luck..

So, just to be sure I've understood, you want to buy something but won't do so unless the retailer approaches you?

Do you stand in the middle of Tesco with a trolley full of groceries until the manager invites you to come along with him to a specially reserved checkout?

Comparing durables and FMCG is hardly the same.

There seems to be a certain amount of disinterest/distain/arrogance required to work in a car dealership.

That is the most stupid of responses I could have expected. I'm not buying a loaf of bread. Is your name Dan?

I think the point is not that he's unable to buy a car unless asked, like a vehicular variation on the vampire theme, but that he's bemoaning the chronic laziness and general incompetence of the car salesmen he's encountered.

I concur, but to be honest they're no worse than any other profession, the UK is crammed with lazy idiots who can't or won't do their job. Last month, phoned two plumbers for a quote. Neither got back to me despite promising they would. Emailed five car audio sites looking to spend a few hundred quid, one replied to a simple query. Requested ringbacks from four insurance firms, two rang me back. And so it goes on.

Bit of an unfair generalisation.

I've had very positive experiences from car dealers.

If you don't like the service, go elsewhere.

The receptionist shouldn't have been so cold, but many are. Dan could've been taken ill so not in. The other sales guy was having to spend time with someone else's customer and wouldn't have got the deal, also I say nothing unless asked a question on a test drive.

Telling them you've another car to see is fair enough but that'd say to me that your not buying today so I'd not spend too much time on you if I couldn't sense any buying signals. Not being called back is irritating but if you really are keen on the car why don't you call them, perhaps ask to deal with a different salesman.

Out of interest what brand of car are you looking at?

I work for a rather larger brand, and if i havent called my customer within 24hours of them coming in for a test drive i get my arse kicked!

Not only that, as a saleswoman, it is in my best interest to try and secure a deal there and then with a customer, regardless of whether they are my customer or not!!!

I honestly dont understand the mentality of some sales people, at the end of the day, its customers who pay my wages, i want to keep them as happy as i can and sell to as many of them as i can.

I think its bad practice that the OP hasnt even had a call.

I take your point. We showed a lot of interest in the car, didn't try any of the arms-folded stuff etc. We discussed the car in detail, talked about finance and we told him about the other car only because that is the genuine situation. Do many people walk in ready to buy today? If they are not ready to buy today, doesn't mean they won't buy tomorrow? I'm not trying to play any games with the dealer and didn't try when in the showroom. We liked the car. How hard can it be for them to pick up the phone? The real problem for me here is if this is the way I'm treated before I buy a car, can I expect the same service after I buy?

I experienced the same when buying a Merc a couple of years ago. Local dealers were hopeless, called around other dealers until one in Manchester wanted to do a deal (200 miles away), he couldn't have been more helpful. It's your money, someone will work hard to give you a good deal on it, if someone local doesn't, they don't deserve your perseverance, walk away.

I'd rather not say as it just going to provoke 'oh well there you go' responses. Its a 4wd 7 seater.

Someone might know a good saleman! judging by the "oh well there you go" is it a BMW X5?

Personally I find the type of showroom that requires a receptionist to tell a sales person to interact with a potential customer slightly irritating anyway.

My suggestion is try a different dealer.

My local Mitsubishi dealership got a sale, just because the Mazda dealership decided they'd met their targets for that month.

Annoying i'm sure, but honestly if it were me, and i was keen on the car i would simply go back, ask for the manager and explain why you wish to buy from him and not the sales people. its only by feedback, the boss will know how his staff are doing.

but i would not forget the car i wanted for it, and i would be there ready to buy provided the deal and car was what i wanted.

because a car is normally one of the biggest purchases we make, so many of us feel we should be treated like a rich arab for the day when we do, in reality its a simple purchase that requires no more attention and respect from the seller than most things we buy daily.
