Hi

I ordered a new car last September expecting delivery in December, well ahead of the VAT increase.
It has been delayed with delivery now expected in Feb. If I take delivery before 28th Feb on a 60 plate, it is price protected against the VAT increase. However, if I want it registered on an 11 plate, I will have to pay the extra VAT.

What do you think is better, take it on a 60 plate registered in Feb, or collect it on March 1st on an 11 plate having paid an extra £800 or so extra VAT?

Does the number plate matter for future value of a car, or just the registration date?

Thanks

The newer reg would help it hold it's value slightly. But I would guess that you wouldn't recover the £800 so not worth it.

If you're keeping it for a long time, then it makes little difference. If you're going to sell it shortly, then an 11 plate is probably better than a 60 plate. Of course, it's very hard to say whether any difference will cover the extra cost...

How long do you keep your cars??

Why not buy an undated registration from DVLA for £500? (e.g. "400 BSK")

This is presumably on a 30kish car?

Personally I don't see why you'd have to pay extra, in fact it's a bit of a piss take on the dealers behalf - it won't cost them any extra to register it in March than February.

I think it'll have more than an 800quid affect on the value for the first few years but I'd still want the dealer to wind their neck in

Did you pay in full when you ordered? If not, you should be liable for the VAT at the current rate isn't it? That's how it has worked at my place anyway. Goods bought and paid for but not delivered pre increase could be invoiced at the lower rate.

Unfortunately I didn't pay for it already. If I had known the rule (6 months allowed for delivery) I would have paid last Sept and had it on an 11 plate.

Car will be kept for around 3 years I guess. I don't want to spend any more on a private plate.

What the dealer and/or manufacturer is saying is they're keen to get sales in the month. As you rightly pointed out, the actual VAT calculation has to be at 20%. I think it's only the net cost to buyer which is up for debate.

6 months delivery? What, are they making it specially or something? Are they growing the cow specifically for your leather seats?

Cancel the car on the basis you had to wait for it but thell them youd take a newer one at the reduced price.

11-plate is better but not worth the extra £800, really depends on the car though.

Seems to be a common enough lead time, ordered a new golf through work back end of september, ticked all the option boxes and my delivery date is April frown

I think youll pay 20% vat anyway and the dealer is willing to discount it if you take before 11 plate reg's as they will be selling no cars at the minute.

If you take it on 60 plate id check the paper work carefully to make sure you are paying 17.5% vat and its not just the dealer discounting it to get his feb sales up.
