Hi Guys

Watching Smokey and the Bandit 2 just now has reawakened by boy hood love of the late 70s Trans Am - like the one below.

They don't seem mega expensive and, IMHO, they are one of the coolest cars ever. I could also buy one in the US and fit in a mega road trip into the bargain.

Anyone on here have one? I realise they probably won't drive too well, but I'm not too fussed about that.

I prefer the 6.6 litre with the snowflake wheels - like the one below (and as featured in the first Smokey and the Bandit).

Great clips here too:

Funny isn't it? With everything I know about cars I ought to hate this but I find the styling details quite attractive - even the showoff bird outline on the bonnet is a "must have" IMO.

For the full Bandit effect, the cars used in the film were supposed to have "ex-NASCAR" engines in them.

I had a 1976 6.6 TA which was desperately unreliable and hugely thirsty with terrible handling and shocking brakes.

Bloody brilliant car biggrin

These have been my probably my favourite American car since I was given a toy one about 34 years ago when I was 7 by an American agent of my dad. Loved them ever since, I've still got it somewhere. I'm sure they'd be mightily disappointing to drive so don't ever plan to, the dream is usually much better than the reality!

Prices will slowly rise.... There's a few good ones about in the UK. The 77' one in the pic command the best price as they've got the best looking front end.
Ditch the standard engine and fit a 455ci early 70's engine, or an LS with a manual conversion.

(.... and yes they can be made to handle and stop.... wink)

And I can think of a good home for the standard engine... wink

I've been keeping my eyes open for one of these for over a year now.
I'm coming to the conclusion that the best option is to import one.
To replace the........ ?

Dear Lord. This is a blast from the past. Some light years before taste and economy were invented hehe

One of our neighbours, a tiny blonde woman, drove one. I remember watching her out the window as a small child. She was doing a 32 point turn. I was rather better at maneuvering mine in the corner of the playground...

I know where there is a blueprinted engine one sitting right now (about 1/4 mile from where I am sitting). But he will NEVER part with it and seems to be very slow on doing it up.

But from what I understand the reason being is that its going to be part of his sons inheritance.

Sound fking awesome on startup cloud9

I've had a couple they can be fantastic fun. Got a 73 455 bull nose at the minute....it's in unbelievable condition being a 2 owner origional 53k mile car. Goes well too being pre emissions. Can't wait till spring again to get out for a run! Bit of a car overload in my garage at the minute so I may pop it in the classifieds this summer....or I may not....argue

You won't regret buying one op. biggrin
