I test drove a 4year 100k 1.9 TDI on saturday, nice car, but shifting gears is hard work. From startup, performing the usual Left to Right Neutral check, requires alot of effort, even after warmup I kept missing 3rd gear, there wasnt the slick movement you would expect once its been driven for a while. I know the Mk IV had its gearbox issues, but the MK V im not familiar with and a web search didnt reveal much, is this normal or is there something more siniter going on?

Thanks

More than likely it'll be the linkages

Did it groan in gear ?

No I didnt hear any sound, just really stiff and coudnt find 3rd gear, what are the typical symptoms of a linkage problem and is it serious?

Stiff linkages is something I have never had myself, but a friend bought his Saxo with the same problem and it's gradually getting looser and looser

On the other hand if it were slack then it could be worn bushes, I currently have this problem with my Saxo

Was the car from a dealer ?

Its an ex-leasing car, sold to a local used car dealer, with no previous history of a gearbox problem, the confusing thng is I would expect it to be loose after 100k miles, not tight. Unless this arfur daley chap had it repaired and didnt want to say?

It's a cable linkage, isn't it? Cables could be too tight / need a bit of TLC.

Just walk away and look at a different one. It's not as if Mk5 Golfs are rare, is it?

It's an ex-lease car with 100k on the clock. Probably covered 250k and had a "mileage correction" before going back to the lease company to avoid crazy fees. smile
