Missis has a '98 Mk 4 Golf with the factory OE radio/cassette head unit and bee-sting aerial on the roof. Radio has always been rubb while we've owned it. It's supposed to have FM and AM but AM is just static and FM reception is patchy - seems to vary according to the weather and is usually better near big conurbations (which is not much good where we live). Some say it might need a new aerial amplifier which entails grubbing about inside the headlining. Any other thoughts out there? News of an easy fix would be greatly appreciated as the missis likes the radio and I would love to provide her with a properly working one in her motor.

Hi, I had a similar problem with my VAG group car, but as I had sat nav too, the cost for a new base unit was really high, so I got a glass mount ariel.
