Is A BMW M3 Wagon On The Cards?

Web rumour suggests M3 Touring is being mulled over in Munich

Note to BMW: Can you please make this...
Note to BMW: Can you please make this...
The webosphere is currently abuzz with the possibility that BMW is looking into an estate version of the M3.

As far as internet rumours go, this is one of the most vague we’ve heard for a while, but it’s also one of the most potentially interesting, so we thought we’d share it with you.

The logic of the idea is pretty sound, too. Since the death of the E60 M5 Touring, BMW hasn’t had a truly rapid wagon on its price lists (a 335d doesn’t count in this context…), while Audi, Mercedes and even Cadillac are providing those who want them with some seriously rapid wagons.

...into an M3. Please?
...into an M3. Please?
According to some folks on the US Bimmerfile forum, BMW has been mulling the idea over for some time, and a prototype M3 Touring has existed since 2008.

So BMW may have been considering an M3 wagon for some time, but the idea hasn’t thus far morphed into a production reality, presumably because of the small volumes involved (BMW only shifted 1025 M5 Tourings). And even if it did happen, you’d probably have to cope with a hefty premium over an M3 coupe. Still, here’s hoping…

I want a wagon, but can't afford M3 money, so have a WRX wagon, cheaper by far!

It would definitely be more appealing than the saloon or coupe to me.

I was about to make the same point as epom about the exploitation of various niches, and that a 'hot-wagon' seems to be a missed opportunity. I'd rather have an M3 Touring than an X6M...!

Why would it be more expensive than the coupé when the saloon is cheaper? Shouldn't it just slot in between both?

M3 saloon = £53,075
M3 coupé = £54,545

It didn't hurt Audi with the RS4 and RS6 estates. I'd say go for it!

Could always look at a VXR Insignia Estate if your not bothered about the badge, get an ex demo and save about 30%.

Quick and 4x4 also a fairly big car.

isn't that because they only exist as estates?

So they build an X6M without a moments thought but can't decide over an M3 Touring?

Blimey...

I think the received wisdom is that, if they did make it, not all that many people would want it, so the unit cost would be higher. Sadly.

I don't know why, but the idea of having an estate, AWD, subtle Audi works for me (if I needed a fast estate).

However, I don't think an M3 wagon fits that 'subtle' mold... I don't know why.

Not a fact, merely an opinion wink

^^ B5 RS4 was Estate only, well in Audi parlance it's 'Avant', not estate. But B7 RS4 was cabrio, saloon or Avant. The upcoming B8 RS4 will be Avant only.

Both versions of the RS6 were saloon or Avant.

A very 'easy' car for them to make and one that could really upset rivals Audi. Always surprised that it's lacking from the line up.
