Got involved, may live to regret it!?

Driving to work this morning, minding my own business along a main road when out of a side road shoots a 306, inches away from my front bumper, I slam my brakes on and the car shoots across in front of me and into the side of a poor sod coming the other way in a people carrier.
I get out and ask if everyone is OK, guy in the people carrier is a little dazed and confused, the 2 'things' in the other car (both female) are looking around, looking shifty.
Out of nowhere runs this other chap and squares up to the bloke in the people carrier asking him who was to blame, we both tell him it was the two womem, not really sure what this blokes involvement is.
Next thing, he's telling them to run... in a traveller accent.
Off they scoot.
I tell they guy they're running off, he doesn't seem to comprehend, so I jumped in my car and went after them, not really sure what my intentions were, I think I just wanted to see where they were going - I pull alongside and ask where they are going... no answer. So I take out my phone and take a picture of them. Suddenly the guy is in my face, telling me that if i want to keep my car and my knee caps then to move on, tells me he's just trying to get to a funeral.
Well I have my picture and I value my knee caps, I'm also in a fairly distinctive car with a cherished plate and I use this route twice a day. I move on.
Back at the scene the guy is on the phone to the police telling them it was a male driving and two female passengers. I ask him if I can speak and tell the police exactly what happened.
A marked car turns up and it turns out there is a large traveller funeral today. Great I say, shouldn't be too hard to track them down, I ask if they want the picture.
No, they don't.
They take my business card and hand it to the chap and tell me I'm not required anymore.
Too much effort I presume given that the car is probably not registered etc etc?
Still shaking now, it took a few mins before realisation hit that it could have been me had I have been travelling at 35mph instead of 30mph or left home a few seconds earlier.

Justice for all!!! Unless it's too much effort or maybe a little scary for the poor police. 
ETA... OP, contact the local paper and anonymously inform them of what happened and the polices (lack of) reaction to your information.

How do these folk buy, tax and insure cars without a fixed address? I know in many cases they have none of the above, but surely if that's the case and the police roll into a camp they can confiscate the cars?
There are 2 pretty large camps set up in the town I live in recently. What a mess they leave behind.
Shocking story and the guy who got hit will be the 1 who takes the financial hit here.

Police are useless in these situations.
Someone damaged SWMBOs car a few months back, we had a description from the neighbours and live in a cul-de-sac with flats at the bottom where people matching the description given who are known to the police live. But the police wouldn't go and question them about where they were on the night it happened, despite having good finger and shoe prints of those that did it.
It would have been an hours work to find out if it was or wasn't those people, but apparently it wasn't worth it.
