Gents,

If you had 6k to buy one of the above, where would your money go and why?

Civic type R engine more fun at high revs. Not sure you'd get a decent st for that money.

I'm not sure there is much of a choice for 6k is there? Unless you are talking about the last shape civic and st170? The new 2.5st and 1.8 type r seem to be 8.5k+

Looking on autotrader and PH I've seen a few STs for c6K - the budget can potentially be pushed up to maybe 8K

I've been considering these along with a LCR.
Seems to be the type r for fun & revs. But a little less easy to drive long distances daily.
The lcr is more comfy& torqey but not as much fun when flat out. Also the vag 1.8t has some niggles.

I think the st is also more of a comfy daily and more grunty then the lcr. But maybe less fun still in the twisties?

Depends what you want out of it.
I'm tempted by the civic as I don't do much milage and want something really reliable and fun but practical to chuck about.

EP3 Type R without question. I've had mine for 6 months now.

Ask away with any questions you might have.

I'm guessing you mean Type S, which isn't a performance car in the slightest.

Oh right I assumed the civic was a just more tuned version on the 1.8 in the rest of the range. I was looking for a way to differentiate between the 2000-2005 and 2007+ type R's. The older seems to be far more in budget. I don't know the EP codes that get mentioned.

I think I would take the ST though as I would hav ethought the lazier power delivery makes it more real world fast than having to rev a vtec.

OP, judging from the above, I sense this thread, like many others, is going to be filled with comments from people who've never owned or probably even driven either of the cars you're asking about.

I forgot to mention before, I had an ST-3 on loan for a few days so I've an idea of what they're like also.

My bro has an ST - great car but after 60k miles it was very rattly - I guess the Type R would be better built and, unless you're ragging the life out of it, the Type R will be more economical.

I prefer turbos to highly strung NA, I've had 2 MK5 Golf Gti's and an Audi TT and a MK1 Leon Cupra recently, all of which I loved, but between a Focus ST and a Type R, I'd get a £6k Civic, but not the one they just stopped making - I test drove both over the years but didn't like the latest one at all - too stiff and revy and heavy feeling.

Don't ST's get around 20mpg in daily driving? I think the Civic would probably be cheaper on fuel at least. Totally different kinds of cars though. Personally I'd lean towards the ST, but then I prefer turbos to N/A cars.

EP3 is what's commonly referred to as a "bread van" FN2 is the newer less good pointy one with the triangle shaped exhausts
