I'm a motoring romantic.

Isnt it just, perfect? The more I think about it, the more I'm realising that I have a very silly, very rose-tinted, very old fashioned outlook on 'motoring' as people used to call it.
I think its wonderful. I think about great journeys, about cars and girls, and sunshine, and countryside, and how it all fits together perfectly.
I have this extremely bizarre thing with music - where when I hear great music, I picture in my mind the car and the scenery and the sweeping cuts and fades that go with it on the big screen. Every car I'm considering buying, I am trying to think about how it would feel on a roadtrip down to Monaco (And generally, the older and more European/Italian, the better they fare in this respect), and how it would look in the opening scenes to a 40 yr old movie.
I've seen those ads for California on TV recently, and sent off for the info and holiday planners for 2012 maybe. Instantly the first thing I thought of is - what car, what road, what music (Mustang, Highway 1, with Pacific to my Right, Beach boys - Wouldnt it be nice. I'm the California tourist boards wet dream. )
What I find odd is that I'm an engineer, I'm a mechanical person with a brain that works in in .mm and angles, and I crave knowledge and science and how to extract power and efficiency and how to fix things or make them better. My wages are paid by the manufacture of products made of steel and aluminium.
Yet the things I love most about cars, are the un-quantifiable things. Anyone else?
I also wonder if this ties in with other things - a fan of convertibles, I 'get' Alfa Romeo, I like to tinker and fix, not remap and replace...
Is it just me these days?

I'm not feeling romantic watching that.
Last Friday I took a friend to view a 59 Giulietta Sprint 1300 which had sat outside open to the elements for many years. Though complete it's in a pretty sad state, but will restore over time and with much money.
I'd decided it was too much for me but liked the price and was considering selling it on. Before doing so though, I showed my friend. The owner was at home and so we all got talking and laughing like you do, and then my friend buys the old girl for a third less than I was offered it!
No hard feelings though. It was quite funny at the time. My friend bid the owner who countered the bid with one a hundred quid less. Yes that's right. A hundred quid less. Laugh, you could have knocked me down with a feather! It's all good though. One lovely car rescued.
