by car.

i normally go M11,A1M, though have been caught in rush hour traffic before in newcastle, though if i leave at 2pm ish i'm guessing this won't be an issue

someone mentioned it's about the same going up the other side of the country - A14, M6, M74 then A702 however I've never done it before so wondered if anyone else here had done/does the same?

can't be worse than when the A1 turns single track, surely!?

Fly?

I think I'd be tempted to get across to the M1 then do A50, M6, M74, A702 but if you're heading up the A1 then make a left at Scotch Corner and cross over to the M6 on the A66 then up the M74 then pick up the A702.

But that's just me.

this sounds like a plan, apparently only 5 miles extra and the A702 has to be better than the last potholed stretch of single laned A1

i would fly, however left this late a return flight at sociable hours is £200 odd, wheras fuel is only £130

IMO the time saving is worth that £70.

Is it quicker to take the A696/A68 from Newcastle rather than the A1?

M11
A1M
A66
M6
M74
A701

Will take you at least 6 hours though, the flight would be worth it imo.

A68 goes through a lot of villages so i'm guessing there's a lot of 30/40 stretches and that it's mainly single lane?

ETA although it is 15/20 miles less

On my way back from Edinburgh last week, I stumbled on the A697 which starts somewhere outside Edinburgh and takes you to the dual carriage/ motorway section of the A1 just north of Newcastle. It was empty, not a single car or lorry in sight, a little twisty and rather interesting...

think i'll try the cut to the M6 at scotch corner.

should have mentioned, am bringing the OH back down with me after a few days up there, so that's another £100 saved

would try the A697, but sounds like it'd add time to the journey...

TBH, door to door, and providing there're no major hold ups, there's not a lot in it timewise and to save he hassle of changing modes of transport, driving's probably worth it.

On a Friday I leave the office in Surrey at 1500 and don't get home till getting on for 2100 using Crazyjet, Gatport Airwick, sttish Rail, a bus and a car. 6 hours. Hence the reason if I'm transporting the family up and/or down the country I'll take the car, one mode of transport for the whole trip and a metric fktonne cheaper for the four of us.

Once I did Aylesbury to Fife in 4 hours. Just once mind.

(May, or may not, have been on a 'plane.)

This.

The A697 would without a doubt be my preferred choice. Its a fantastic driving road and extremely quiet with plenty of places to pass slower traffic. The road joins the A1 duel carraigeway at Morpeth(10 miles or so North of Newcastle) and in my experience doesn't take any longer than the A1 at busy times. smile

It is mainly single lane, but not that many villages - from Newcastle I can only think of five or six between there and the outskirts of Edinburgh. Other than that its quick NSL all the way and certainly less busy and more entertaining than the A1, but watch out for the cameras.
