e46 BMW 318 to Astra

I need a change from my e46 318. It's also 8 years old and I require something a little bit newer.
Would I be stupid to consider an Astra? In particular, the 1.8 SRI sports hatch.
I was toying with the idea of a 118 / 120 because I'm a fan of BMW's in general and have been happy with my 4 years of e46 ownership. However, for the money I'd spend on the Astra, I could get into a poverty spec 1-er.
Opinions?
For what it's worth, I do about 20,000 per year and I'm 24 so insurance still plays apart although I don't mind paying to drive the 'right' car.
