Hi guys,

I'm looking for a replacement for my wife's 2003 A6 Avant, it is the 1.9 PD 130bhp Multi-tronic

Whilst we haven't had a problem with the gearbox I know many have so I'd like to get the later DSG box which I believe means another A6 is out as I don't want a 4WD.

Looking therefore at an 05 - 07 Octavia and Passat (must be big, auto, economical and 5dr)

The Octavias appear to be PD (even the 2.0) whilst the Passats and most of the VAG group seem to have gone back to TDi - why is this and does it matter ?

Thanks

The latest TDi engines are now common rail not PD, which is sort of amusing if you've ever spent any time being told on training courses by Audi trainers how superior PD is to common rail...
The PD designation quietly slipped away in the night and just TDi remains. smile
if i can find the training material i'll share it...

PS no A6s have had DSG fwd or quattro. Quattros are traditional tiptronics.

Yes thats what's confusing me !

When I bought the A6 everyone said "you want a PD" and they were more powerful than TDi now VAG seem to have reverted to TDi / common rail like everyone else.

I wondered why ?

Emmissions ?

You have...

TDi PD (pumpe dusche)

and

TDi CR (common rail)

Both are TDi, just a different injection method.

ETA: the Octavia was PD until about 2009 I think, then it went CR. Both are 2.0. There was also the earlier 1.9 TDi engine.

The CR TDIs are much smoother and more refined, the power delivery is spread across the rev range

This, I drove a 2.0 CR TDi (140) and I was surprised how much the engine tech had moved on from my PD.

wasn't the move from PD to TDI CR because of DPF's? Something to do with PD's not being able to offer the post injections required for regeneration?

Until the approx. £1000 high pressure fuel pump breaks, making some serviceable cars beyong economical repair!

You should try and avoid tdi vag cars that were built between 2005-2007 as it seems a few if them had failed injectors

The cr is a lot smoother but I like my pd , it's a kick in the back in 2nd 3rd and 4th 5th and then it sort of cruises in 6th

didn't the PD have a high pressure pump on each injector though? doesn't sound cheaper!

The injectors on the PD engines were around £500 each from dealers IIRC, the fuel pumps weren't exactly cheap either.

The VW 2.0 CR TDi hasn't been out long in some models (like the Octavia) but has been out since 2005/6 in the passat.

But ALL the common rail cars have expensive high pressure pumps but the VAG PD runs even higher pressures but run by the camshaft.

Yeah, totally irrelevant to the UK.
