Something got me thinking earlier whilst browsing PH on my break at work.

Obviously BHP increases are relative to insurance hikes etc. but is it possible to have a 200 odd BHP'd car in a low insurance bracket? Not talking specifically 200, however its a ballpark figure for decent everyday performance. What if we also take into account BHP/Tonne? Any hidden gems out there that are insurance friendly?

Going for the BHP/tonne route, I believe kit cars are ridiculously cheap to insure?

yes

you have to pin point the right insurer though....... don't know how a 7 style car would be ideal for an only car although i;m sure there are many others..... personally I'm not keen on anyother kit car styles apart from GT40's hehe

My dear Ikram, I can think of tonnes of cheap cars with loads of BHP off the top of my head!

TVRs etc spring to mind too, as do loads of kit cars as said.

Just look at stuff which isn't mainstream such as Imprezzas, M3s etc.

I was talking cars already in production. It is very easy to have a kit car insured for fun IYSWIM. That route is for a later date, when I can afford to have something on the side.

Off on a bit of a tangent, but I found once you got to 5 years ncb the MR2 turbo offered the best performance for the inusrance paid.

I paid £875 full comp with protected ncb, parked on the street in London, with 5 yrs ncb.

With that your looking mid 5's to sixty, top end of 160mph +, not too much will beat it in pure bang for you buck at insurance below £1000!

Not really on the level of MR2 Tubbys. I was talking more about the 'white goods' that you see everyday. What's the lowest insurance group for something decent?

Classics are surely the winner. My 928 S2 is circa 300hp and costs just over a hundred quid a year to insure.

MG ZS 180 doesnt sting too much on insurance... Well I can get it insured for only £200 more than my Iggy...

Generally there's also companies which cap how much BHP you can have depending on your age... :S My insurers refused to insure me on anything over 150BHP before I turned 21... Now my cap seems to be at over 200bhp... frown sad times.

Looking at the difference between Golf GTI mark2s the other day, the difference between 8V and 16V for me was a whopping £57/bhp for the additional 26 or so bhp. Yet in a few months time with 2 years NCB, I could insure a 16V for cheaper than I could insure an 8V tomorrow!

I think I'll just get a 306 GTi in the end though.
