Can I put my cherished reg no on retention without MOT?

Great if anyone can help me here please. This is the situation: car has just spectacularly failed its MOT and I don't want to throw any more money at it (its a 7 year old BMW which has failed its emissions test and looks like its has imminent engine failure) so its going to be moved on. But it has my cherished number plate on it which I'd like to keep if possible and place on retention. So the question is, is it possible to transfer the reg no off the car without a current MOT certificate? I've searched various sites on the internet but can't find an answer. Does anyone know?

My understanding is you have to have a current valid MOT (but I'm no expert). Did you go for the MOT on the last day? Haven't you got any time on the old ticket to sort it out?

Yes you can if the car is registered in your name you have 12 months grace it has just gone up from 6 months.I have just done one myself and have done so in the past.

Sorry for bringing up an old thread, but i'm in the same boat now as my MG has not passed its MOT and will cost Loads to repair, (more than the cars worth) so i'd like to put my plate on retention.

when i spoke to the DVLA the lady on the phone was pretty adamant i need to have an MOT.

Is it best to speak to DVLA or better to go to the nearest office?

any advice would be really appreciated!

You can do it as long as the MOT has recently expired. I did the same back in November. I think the car might need to be taxed though.

I just filled out the usual forms and got the retention certificate back 2-3 weeks later.

On the phone they were adamant that it needed an MOT, but I asked the question on the DVLA twitter page and they confirmed it could be done (https://twitter.com/DVLAgovuk).

Local offices don't deal with personalised registrations any more, they'll just tell you to send the forms off if you go visit one.

You don't need a car or an MOT to keep a plate on retention. Just fill out a V317 and they issue you with a certificate for the cherished plate and a new V5 with a regular number for the car with no MOT. Costs about 25. You have to renew the certificate every year at the same cost.

That's a relief, thanks very much for that.

the MOT expired last Friday 23rd May, so i'll send off the paperwork tomorrow and all should be well. the tax runs out in September so no worries there.

I already have people chomping at the bits to take the car away but until the plate is off its staying with me, but at least i can give some sort of time scale.

You're welcome Make sure you send the tax disc off with the paperwork as they need to issue a new one with the new plate for the car with no MOT.
