which 7 seater for 3-4k

We've got a grand voyager 3.3 Auto, loads of space for 7 people plus a big boot space. Leather seats, electric doors and boot, big spoiler, side boards, privacy glass, looks smart, drives a lot better than the review sites give it credit for. Its quick off the mark and holds the bends really well.
All its cost me in 3 years of ownership is 4 tyres, front pads and disks, and an air con regas.

We've got a VW Sharan VR6 which tbh is a bit past it's best and as a result I'm looking at replacing it with something in the price range you're looking at.
I have absolutely no complaints with the Sharan, it's cost buttons to keep on the road in the two years we've had it. It's fast, (surprises a few youngsters in corsas/clios!), and is very comfortable so any searches I do I start looking for them, Galaxys or Alhambras.
The Wife wants an auto though and I'd like, (although it's not implicit), a diesel. Given that combo's not too common and we live in Scotland where there aren't so many cars for sale I've not found a suitable one yet.
Had considered a Voyager, but I've heard bad stories about them which put me off. Seems you can't believe everything you hear on the grapevine then huh?
Just out of interest, what's the MPG on one of them?

We have had no issues at all, I bought it with 1 previous owner who bought it to cart his grandkids around, I have a massive folder full of history and invoices, including the original purchase receipt for £29k! It was an ex demo so had all the options. I bought it with 68k miles, it now has 92k. I only paid £4k cash for it and it has paid for itself many times over now.
We went to Spain in it twice last year and it never skipped a beat. It's great because of the size and space for luggage as well as people.
Around town it only averages around 17/18 mpg but on a run (ie when we went to spain) it averaged 27mpg. Seriously thinking of getting it converted to LPG.

Yeah, that's about what I get out of the VR6.
Again, just out of interest, the only complaint I would have of the Sharan is that it can be quite noisy at motorway speeds from the resonance in the cab. Nothing wrong with it, but it can make conversations a bit of a chore. What's the Voyager like?

The voyager is actually quite luxurious. The engine is nice and quiet at cruising speeds. It makes itself heard when you floor it and it drops a gear. I tend to just set the cruise at 80 and let it do its thing.Again, just out of interest, the only complaint I would have of the Sharan is that it can be quite noisy at motorway speeds from the resonance in the cab. I found once I got rid of the Good year Tyres and went to Maxxis that the road noise was quietened right down.
