...because in a moment of ocd madness I just have. Am I insane?

So following on from yesterdays thread I decided to give my keys a full detail.

Now I'm no expert, but thought I'd post up the process so you can get your keys looking as good as mine. wink

Firstly here is a picture of the keys before, washed, but not detailed.

You can see in the next picture the full extent of the problem. Severe ingrained dirt from years of use.

Here are the weapons of choice.

Firstly I rinsed the the metal components to remove any loose dirt particles, then agitated in an acid bath (Tesco Distilled Vinegar). I employed a specialist dirt removal tool (Colgate Total Pro Tip Massager brush, medium) to really get into those crevices:

Next I rinsed the metal components clean and washed using Fairy liquid tangerine and ginger flower. After another rinse, I was left with this:

The next stage was a thorough grease removal with Auto Glym Intensive Tar remover, followed by the now obligatory rinse

I also used a terry towel cloth in conjunction with the tar remover on the remote locking fob.

Next I used Auto Glym Metal Polish to start to bring out the shine.

Finally I applied a protective layer of Meguiars Gold Class wax.

For the remote fob and torch, I treated with Auto Glym Vinyl and Rubber care and they came up really well.

Anyway I am sure you'll agree the results are quite simply stunning.

I have exactly the same alarm and immobiliser on my MK1 mx5 too.

Not standard fitment either I don't think.

Although i've never "detailed" mine.

Oh dear. Just wait until the "pro" car washers see this- they'll be annoyed that an amateur didnt pay them to detail the keys...

The doing is mad. The photographing is certifiable.

A most amusing thread - I love the fact that you not only found the time to actually detail your keys, but that you also did a full photo-write-up! Brilliant hehe

I don't even wash my car, let alone polish the keys.
