I'm shopping around for insurance at the moment. I know I have 9+ (actually more like 17) years of no claims bonus, because I've not been at fault for an accident in that time (well, I was "at fault" in insurance terms when a scrote attacked my car, but that was only because he didn't pay back the excess ... another story) and anyway I have had protected no claims for years. However my renewal from swiftcover only states "5 or more years". The difference between quotes with 5 and 9 years no claims is £40 or so, 10-12%.

If I complete the forms with 9+ years of no claims, will Swiftcover (who I have been with for only 2 years) provide proof of no claims for the 9+ years, or just the "5 or more years" on the renewal letter? Or is there another way the prospective insurer can or will check?

No idea what they'll do.

However, you have 5 years No Claims Bonus / Discount. The remainder of the years are simply "claim free" anyway, as there is no further discount to be earned after 5 years, so it doesn't matter whether they show 5 years or 500 years.

Depends on the insurer. I was with Esure last year as their system goes higher.

I sell car insurance for Toyota and even though over 5 years should make no difference to lots if companies you can and I would get full proof. Ask your current insurance company to provide your NCB as it is now and also what it was when you joined them in writing. this should then show if needed that you do have 9 years or more.

i hassled direct line to enter my correct number of no claims against my record on their system, as they tried to do the same thing to me. The "well it doesn't matter to us" argument is a ruse: they know it matters to other insurers so it is a technique to discourage you from moving. Just call em till they do it.
