Anyone owned a Wrangler 4-door?
Discussion
Had a Disco 3 a while back which had to be one of the most useful cars I have ever owned and now have the hankering for a 4x4 again to be mainly used as a family car and a bit of fun as well as lugging loads of kit.
The newish Wrangler 4-door has caught my eye and seems pretty reasonable 2nd hand. I like the looks more than the Defender but like the Landy I presume it's basicness should make it easy to look after.
I had too many electronic gremlins with the Disco.
A friend of mine drives her Defender from deepest Kent to Newcastle pretty regularly so I am also presuming that the Jeep should be OK on the road yet more comfortable for my 6ft frame as I have always found the Defender a bit of a squeeze.
So if you have owned one do let us know what you think?
Cheers.

There are plenty of threads on the subject, and plenty of good reasons the wrangler is better than a landy and plenty to suggest it's not. But it's no more refined on road and is barely more spacious. And the rear tailgate is crap.

Have driven loads and am constantly close to swapping my old Jeep TJ for one.
They are fun, capable off road and ok on road. The cheap plastic roof and basic interior do not live up to modern counterparts but they should not really be compared.
A black topless Wrangler Unlimited, on wide black Mickey Thomson wheels, nobbly tyres, with a 3 inch lift and a borla sports exhaust is about as cool as it gets.

Patriots are rubbish. I wouldn't touch one with 300bhp/t's.
They are the modern gay Jeep.
They are the modern gay Jeep.

Even as a family lugger that might do a little off-road ie get across a beach, muddy fields and snow.
As to the Wrangler, surely it's on road manners are better than a Defender's and I know a lot of people who use Defenders as their main car.

And what of the Patriot. Is it Jeeps version of the Freelander 2? They seem pretty cheap and from YouTube videos they seem able to tackle light off-roading.
Lots of talk of 42 mpg from the diesel engine.
Cheers.
Not been in a Patriot, not really my sort of thing. I'm sure it's ok, but totally different to a Wrangler.Lots of talk of 42 mpg from the diesel engine.
Cheers.

Good for farmers - hopeless for anyone else IMO. "On road" is definitely not the Wrangler's strong point, even with the newer models.
They are still fine on road however. As comfy as most small 90's hatchbacks or better, will easily cruise at 80mph and stop and corner fine, even in the rain.croyde said:

For what they are, and what they are capable of...Wranglers are not that bad on the road - the one you are considering is a massive leap over the previous gen. Like any car you get used to them after a while and the way they handle becomes the norm. In the UK I'd be concerned about the lack of insulation on the roof as it really is just a sheet of hard plastic so it will be hard to keep any heat in - out here it is very hard to keep them cool in summer.
If you are after a sensible family car this is not it. You might see a lot of people using Defenders as daily drivers but they are usually:
a - farmers
b - beards
c - a bit mental

Holy cow you're setting your standards low! I tried a brand new one and rate it as one of the worst "new" vhicles I've ever driven on road.Ozzie Osmond said:

Then you have some pretty unrealistic ideas...Personally I liked the way it drove. It felt like a 4x4, which is exactly how I want a 4x4 to be. It was quick enough for road use too (as quick as a TDV6 Disco3) and wasn't dangerous. It was also quieter than my Tdi Disco.

Nowhere near as refined as a Freelander. Still a decent car, and great value for the money (starts at £15k new IIRC which must be cheapest in class). Well specced and a better interior than you might imagine. Certainly the facelift version has a much improved updated interior. I owned 2.0 tdi Ltd which came with leather, cruise, satnav HDD (v good), heated seats, bluetooth etc. It's the old VW PD diesel so a bit agricultural comared to the newer CR engines. I believe the newer diesels have the Merc 2.2 CR, although I've never driven that engine. Lots of talk of 42 mpg from the diesel engine.
Cheers.
I've never driven it offroad so can't comment on that. I've taken a Wranger and Grand Cherokee offroad, and they were both fabulous, class leading.
Interior space isn't up to much but it's a Focus sized car so what do you expect. Compared to the budget 4x4 competition e.g. Qashqai, it's excellent.

as an aside, when I checked out jeep (uk) website the other daym the only new models mentioned are the patriot and wrangler - whats happened to cherokee and grand cherokee? are there new once coming?
Cherokee was a total flop so not sure if they are importing any more. Grand Cherokee is being replaced shortly. Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
