What effect does telling the garage your car is remapped have on the price they may offer in p/x and also are you obliged to tell them its been remapped?

Obviously if they ask you then it would be wrong to lie, but if they don't ask you and you don't tell them then is there any comeback on you?

Cheers,

Matt

Legally, I don't think you have an obligation to tell a dealer, but morally I think you do - I guess it depends on whether or not you believe in karma!

As far as affecting the price, I suspect it would reduce their offer. I may just be a cynic...

It might be worthwhile information for any subsequent purchaser of the car, whether it be an incentive or disincentive. Dealer sells it on, new owner and their insurers are unaware it's been mapped. Accident occurs. Remap is discovered. New owner claims they didn't know. Insurance company says "Yeah! Right!".

I told them when I part exed my Leon, not expecting any more cash for it but so they have the chance to tell the next owner. It would be unlucky to buy a car, having only test-driven that one, then to have a smash and the insurance company not pay out because of an undeclared mod.

Edit, beaten to it. The alternative is that most re-mappers will remove the map for a small fee. No need to volunteer the info that you used to have a map (unless asked)

So morally I should but legally I don't have to?

I am going to ring my local tuners and ask them how much it will cost to return it to normal anyway but the thought made me curious.

I'd never even considered it an issue until I read this thread. Have p/x a number of modified cars without saying anything simply because it didn't occur to me to do so.

Hope the subsequent owners never had any issues. Also didn't declare uprated parts to the dealers I was changing the car with either.......how far down this road do you have to go I wonder- uprated shocks? different compound brake pads? uprated speakers in the audio system?

IIRC often whoever mapped the ECU will include with the job a free "return to standard" service. So, provided you got the map done then this might be available to you?

I'm on a mega saving spree at the moment so I can get the car I want in April, Didn't really wanna do the 150 mile each way trip to wolverhampton and back to get it taken off.

Depends on the car IMO. When I had an impreza the PPP was considered a good thing!
