I want to use the old style silver on black combination number plate for a 1987 car i'm working on to give it at more clasic feel. I've found information on number plate dimensions but nothing on colour other than post 2001 cars must black on white/black on yellow and pre 1971 can be black on silver.

You can't legally use silver on black plates on an 80s car.

Is that front and back?

Where did you get this info from?

I have a feeling you are probably right but just double checking. laugh

Illegal on a post-'73 car. If you get pulled the fine's £60. You may want to risk it, you may not. it's up to you. I think that's right.

You are right pre 73 only.

The car must have been built before 01 01 1973 in order legally to display black and white/silver numberplates.

1987? That's bloody new !! I think, despite it being illegal, silver on black on an '87 car would look stupid. The Sierra Cosworth had been out for over a year in '87, that's how new '87 cars are !!

I think you can get around the issue by building a new car (or putting shell of an old one) on an older car that would legally be allowed these plates. The basic idea being to register it as the older car. You might even be able to use a small part of the chassis to do this but neither is practical. I think people who make replica cars that go on classic black silver plates use this technique using old VW beetles. Could be wrong...

I remember seeing a black 3dr cosworth sporting black/silver plates back in the day.

Would you not get told to rectify and present rather than a fine straight away? I only ask as my pal has just put on on his 90 something mini as he thought it was worth chancing it!

The letter of the law is pre '73 but if you decide to put the plates on a certain car over another it will raise less of an issue because it won't stick out like a sore thumb.
You put them on an M plate mondeo and you'd get a tug but an M plate Mini and I'd bet you'd be left alone.
I have a friend that had a Hutson (MGTF) kit car. The car is actually a 95 but looks like a mid 50s so gets away with those plates.

What car is it on?

Basically, if it's a model that was made in 1973 (like a 911) and styled accordingly, you could probably get away with it using a dateless registration. You may get told off and told to change it but it'd probably work out.

If you're restoring a Vauxhall Astra, it isn't going to work

2010 car with b&s plates wink. Just thought we needed a photo or two. Trying to get hold of an illegally spaced, trimmed down plate was nightmare, but looked silly on normal plates.

A pre-February 1990 Isle of Man registration can be white on black. Not sure of the legal side of keeping a Manx registered car in the UK.
