Then tonight I happened to join a motorway at the same time as a 997 turbo. We both accelerated at the same time - and the 911 was quick a lot quicker than my car.

I mean I knew it would be quick but I'm on 420hp with the M3 - just how fast are the turbos?

Or was it that i was caught unaware and was playing catch up from the initial pull away?

I was impressed

They are absolutely incredible. Out on a PH early morning tunnel run I was WOT in a 996 in upper reaches of third, when a 996 turbo pulled alongside and then, vanished. Awesome power.

The only other thing that seemed to have the same sort of shove was the Nissan GTR that was also on the run.

Not sure what model it was but a gen2 997 will do 100mph in less than 7.5 sec's so they are rocketships

With the Turbos 500ft/lb of torque you're always going to be on the wrong end of the debate in an M3.

I'm surprised you were surprised? As my 911 C2S is more than a match for a M3

I had an e92 M3 before and its a lovely car and I still miss that engine, so I'm not M3 bashing.

A 996 Turbo (not S, not X50, not tuned) when rolling is more of a match.

997 Turbo is a completely different league, 10 seconds faster 0-150 mph for example.

No Porsche turbo or otherwise involved but on the way back from a meet a few weeks ago we were having a play on the motorway. Two Ferrari F430s VS a Nissan GTR.

GTR ate them for breakfast! Phenomenal power!

Well actually it was way past breakfast nearly lunchtime really but whatever.

You're car I'm sure is rapid, but I've seen a 997 turbo S launch and it recorded 0-60 a fraction under 3 seconds yikes on a datatronics box the 50-100 time is ridiculously quick aswell.

sensationaly quick cars !

It's not just the power, it's the torque and availability thereof at any speed/gear,

As well as the clever 4wd to make the best use of the engine in all conditions.

Fookin weapons they are.

But maybe a little too easy to go fast in...

A Porsche 911 turbo is even quicker than an Audi A5 TDI, apparently.

I've had a play with the current M3 and I'm a little quicker in a straight line (won't go there with cornering hehe ), however, I had a play with a 996 X50 turbo last year and bot do those things fly! I've driven one though and it feels slower than my TVR from the driving seat as the power is rpetty constant whereas mine gives a huge shove when I hit the power band.
The 997 is way faster than the 996tt so would anihalate me in my lowly little car.

Yes, but where it really looses out is MPG. smile

yeah - don't get me wrong - I expected the 997 Turbo to be quick - but it was just how quick. I've never been in one or driven one.

I've had a go in the 997 C2S - and it felt very similar to the M3.........but the turbo was st off a shiney shovel quick!

I love the M3..........but maybe when saving up for upgrade next time i'll be considering the 997 Turbo - especially now as they are in the mid 50s.... (I got a 3 year old M3 so only paid mid 30s)

I'd love a 430........but i'm guessing the 997 Turbo is faster?

I'm being lazy - I could look all of this up...........but fancied chewing the fat. biggrin

This is entirely what the turbo is about - its bhp figure is possibly deceptive - the wall of torque available at pretty much all revs in all gears is just incredible

After this I wish I wasn't 18 with a 1.1, I think the 997s turbo has the same power as my engine hehe

ah yes - of that I can't deny.........I didn't unfortunately have time to get my windows down that bloody 997 turbo was so fast...... biggrin

I was thinking about it on my 'sedate' drive from the motorway.

I think 3rd gear is my favourite biggrin
